US citizens can vote in state elections matching last US residence

Post by alison »

Hello all,

I was surprised to learn from a friend that US expats can vote in state elections for the state where they last lived:

I've been doing that ever since I moved here in 2019. I also vote in local elections. I'm up to date with my registration for the next round, one in August and then the midterms, and so is hubby. We have the option to vote via post or to scan the filled-in ballot and email it, which is how we've always done it, but it's not allowed everywhere. Also, filing one's registration materials on time is critical and varies by location. :D

Same here. It may all change this year if Trump has his way.

Yes. I'm trying not to freak out about that possibility. :(

You can vote for statewide offices, but not local offices.

I am allowed to vote in local elections too (Lawrence, KS), and do, such as for mayor, school board, county clerk, judicial appointments, local referendums, etc. Obviously I'm no longer as attached to those outcomes on a daily personal level, but they are tied into what happens upstream. Local election issues are most often on the ballot with state and federal elections cuz then there's higher voter turnout. Isolated local elections are usually about dirty politicians trying to get something bad passed when turnout is low and are thus very important too. I stay informed through a women's political information group I was once in and from close friends.
