Can I get Engineer status from work experience?

Post by Garaoke »

Hi Toy Town and welcome back.

I currently work as a Process Engineer but do not have an official Engineering degree. I am 25 years working in this industry with the last 5 as Process Engineer. Lots of dead end answers online when I ask this question.

Can I get Engineer status from work experience? I know of 2 men in Ireland who got degrees from a Dublin university based on the working experience. Is there any chance of this here in Germany ? I am Over 50 so not willing to study again online or in person. Full time job and 2 kids. I just would not manage.

Any info would be great.

Many thanks. Engineer without a Degree.

You can have a business card with the word "Engineer" on it, no problem. Just do not claim to be "Diplom-Ingenieur", this might end really bad, because this would be considered fraud...

Colleague of mine was employed as technician, no Uni degree. His contract was about to end.
Wanted to apply for a new opening as engineer in our same workplace. Spoke with the direct line manager "I'd like to apply for the engineer job, but damn I don't have engineer title, can I still apply....?"
He did apply and got the job, everybody happy with it.

BUT, he was already known by all around, and he was very well liked. And very often, a job that requires "engineer" has a lose description..... I remember many ads where the description says like "engineer skills or equivalent".

Good luck

There are some American universities that offer credits toward a degree based on experience. Or at least were a few decades back. IIRC they will offer you tests, that you choose, and if you pass will credit those as a completed course. I do believe these unis will want you to take various online courses though, such as the odd maths, English, history, sciences, etc.

Whether or not these unis are accredited, I cannot say. Again, since learning this decades ago, things might have changed but worth looking into.
