avoiding the middle of the day
It is a bit too hot for me these past few days. I now avoid going out between 11 and 3. I lie on my bed with a cooling fan near my head and simply read or listen to the BBC World Service. I would normally go to the gym at about 1 as it breaks the day nicely up. Now I go early in the morning. Even then, I can feel the heat of the day brewing.

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
I'm afraid that "things to come" are here already.
I don't know how I would survive without AC and 3 ceiling fans.
A person told me the other day that she loves this weather and that it never gets above 25°in her house.

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
The front of our house faces north and the side of a hill, so that side of our house is always cool. I am sat in the study and it's nice.
Outside looks like a furnace, but kid#2 who has just moved the Foodi cooker out there for me says it's not so bad on that side outside either. He hung washing out on the south side earlier and said it was like a wall of heat.
Yesterday we were out and about all day with friends in the heat, but we were visiting Hermann the German in the Teutoburger Wald and there was a good breeze, so the day was remarkably do-able (in the shade, or the car with a/c).
Edit, after stuffing some Hirse in the machine outside, for salad tonight : Kid#2 was so wrong. Boy is it hot out there

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
It's currently 29° in my workshop and 30,3° in the kitchen upstairs. It's simply too bloody hot! I can't even grip my needles properly to get any work done. Madness!

Went for a very long, very hard, bicycle ride yesterday. Italy. In the mountains. Temperature ranged from 21° to 42°. With sufficiente drinking I actually liked It.

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
I'm in Ireland at the moment where it's a balmy 16 degrees and sunny. I'm really grateful to be missing out on that weather, although I expect it will be there again in late July and August.
Stay cool

I wonder if Frau Fruit needs all those fans when she is already the coolest person on this forum.

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
Heard on the radio that, its going to cool down now for a while.
Maybe this is all down to Global warning, and maybe its just a couple of odd summers, who knows.
Its the lack of rain that really annoys me

We use this we got from Amazon ‘SwissMedicus Pferdebalsam mit Hanf - Kühlende Wirkung für Muskeln & Gelenke - gel mit 25 natürlichen Extrakten - Ideal für Sportler - Alltäglicher Gebrauch - Tiefenwirksame Formel’. Super cooling and seemed to repel mosquitoes too

Yall are too funny! What a nice way to start my cooler day.
Oh, and it's global warming even for those who don't believe in it.

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
Maybe here yes. I grew up in New Orleans in the 60s-70s, an extremely humid climate and could get hot. It was normal to stay inside from midday to late afternoon. I also lived for 12 years near Sacramento, CA. Summer temps were always 40+ C, albeit dry heat. I spent 19 years with hot humid summers in Kansas. One’s daily routines and rhythms must be timed around such weather. I realize that’s more challenging when one didn’t grow up that way.colincostello wrote: ↑Wed Jul 02, 2025 2:15 pm It is a bit too hot for me these past few days. Re: avoiding the middle of the day
Slightly odd question, but what does it smell like?
It looks interesting, if it doesn't smell like a hospital ward

(I once broke a TCP bottle in the bathroom and that ruined bathtime for weeks....)

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
It was 36°C here yesterday. Went up to 28 inside. I open up early morning to cool the house down and when it starts to warm up, the shutters come down. Today it's a nice 23°C so the windows are open.

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
Many who live on the shady side of the block haven't noticed how hot things are getting these days. The rest know too well.
Our last place was an oven. So we now picked somewhere in the shade. But the immobilien people are still pushing bright and sunny places.
I have a quiet, variable speed fan pointed just at me, all day. And I'm in my cool bubble. Doors and windows closed to prevent the hot air leaking in.
At some point in the evening it's cooler outside so we switch to open windows so we get a through draft.
Our aim is to insulate the roof and walls to keep cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Re: avoiding the middle of the day
Yup, insulating our roof made a giant difference. Some friends stayed up in our loft bedroom on Monday when it was high 30s here, with a screen across the big south facing window and the small west window open for some air, and they said it was absolutely fine, not too hot at all.
Before insulation it was truly hard to breathe as you went up that last staircase.
