Our printer has died, an HP multifunction that we could use to copy, scan, and print. Frankly, I think we could go even more basic. Plz let me know if anyone has a replacement to suggest.

Don't get an ink printer, the ink dries and then you can't print, get a laser printer.
You will again need one with a scanner, for all your tax documents.
And you really don't want to go with one that doesn't have an automatic document feed, since having to raise the lid and place the document on the glass manually every time is a pain.

The toner will be cheaper if you don't choose a HP this time.

I've had a Brother B/W laser + scanner + copy since 2009 and never had a problem. The toner lasts me around 5 yrs. and cost about 13€ on ebay (generic, no brand) and I've had to change the drum once and the drum + toner on ebay right now is 25€. Changing the toner is easy and even changing the drum with youtube instructions is easy.

I've been fighting with them for over 2 years about a faulty PC I bought. Sent it for repair 3 times. They have only just now agreed - well, notebooksbilliger agreed - to give me a partial refund. It wasn't cheap so the refund will cover my replacement and then some.

I'm going with a mini PC like Himself has. I used his over the summer and liked it.

I have a Ricoh SP 220snw that the ever helpful Panda suggested back in.... 2017? I believe. An absolute workhorse. Aye, no colour. But prints, scans and copies .... einwandfrei! It is showing no signs of near death. It also prints transparencies. Toner cartridges last a donkey's age and are not over expensive.

I doubt it's still made and would well imagine there is a Ricoh replacement printer.

If you only need to print black and white I highly recommend a small Brother laser printer, they cost around 110-120 EUR and they are made for serious work and very cheap to run. If you need the scanner Brother has a 4-in-1 (black and white as well) for around 250 EUR and it has a document feeder, but that's not a feature we use. We don't scan anymore using our scanner (we have and old horrible inkjet for that) we just use our phones for that.

Whatever you choose, stay away from inkjet printers, sooner or later they will clog and give you problems.

Alot to think about.

If you are going to buy an inkjet, then I have heard good things about cannon. My company uses them, and all the people recommend them, we use them alot for a month then its off for 6 months, but it works, when we need it again.

I was given an old Epson inkjet printer XP600, as he owner did not like it anymore, it must be around 20 years old now, and it seems to do the job.

I had lots of problems, with it initially, because I do not do so much printing, so it would start to dry up. I first tried printing something I do not need about every 2 weeks, this was enough I found for it not to dry up.

I later tried just switching it on, every week, as this uses a small amount of ink, each time you start it, this also seems enough, to stop the ink drying up.

I think alot comes down to preference, I like to have the option to print in colour, but I almost never use it. I can go months without printing anything either colour or Blank and white, so it will dry-up, but switching it on, leaving it for an hour or so seems to keep it going. I use cheap ebay Cartridges, which saves alot on replacement stuff.

I would agree, a cheap B/W laser printer is probably the best option, for cheap and easy, low maintenance printing. But I still want to have the colour option, which the inkjet does, at a low price, but requires me to switch it on/off every week or 2, to keep it working. I can go on holiday for 3 weeks away from Munich, and it still seems to work after I get back.

The sell model for inkjet printers seems to be like the sell model for raisers and blades, ie New inkjet printers are cheap, but you pay a lot for the new genuine cartridges, thats why I get the cartridges from ebay for a cheap price.

Wow! I’m in with the grandkids at the moment and hubby managed to get the bugger back on track, except blue ink doesn’t work. We agreed that based on ridiculous cartridge prices and increased foolishness with this device that we will upgrade very soon and avoid a future disaster. All of your comments are very useful. For what its worth I have a HP Envy 5032 Printer/Scanner since March 2019 & am pretty happy with it.

In recent years I've been using no-name refilled ink cartridges without problems.

In recent years I've been using no-name refilled ink cartridges without iproblems.

I would like to keep what we have as long as possible. I really hate the “throw away” culture. PM me plz if you can recommend where I can order the no-name cartridges.

I would try it, see it improves, if not try again, if not wait a couple of hours and try again. Dunno maybe hubby already tried this !

Its a replacement colour cartridge, because you said the blue/cyan colour does not work well. 17,90 is not much if it works in the end. Although the offer Franklin posted, is good at only 44 euro for a full working printer. Something to think about.

After that, you can clean the print head with liquid cleaner fluid, but thats more mess, if the print head does not work after that, then its the end of the printer. As print heads are very expensive to replace, sorry.
