Aufenthaltserlaubnis v Niederlassungserlaubnis

Post by Alexeins »

My Aufenthaltserlaubnis is coming up for renewal (a still sane Brit emerging from the Brexit debacle), and I was wondering, what would the advantages be of a Niederlassungserlaubnis instead? When I posed the idea to the Auslanderamt, I got the email reply that as I already have Daueraufenthalts status, (on the basis of the Brexit Agreement), it wouldn't be an option. Or maybe they meant, there wouldn't be any point. i.e. I already have permanent residence in Germany.
Anybody any experience of an Niederlassungserlaubnis and does it give you any extra benefits?

As far as I understand it, your 'Daueraufenthaltsstatus' is the gold standard. You won't get an extra sausage for owing a 'Niederlassungserlaubnis'.
However, you can boost your status by applying for a German citizenship. You can keep the British one. (new dual citizenship law, starting 2X June 2024)

Yup apply for citizenship. Also maybe you can get the Daueraufenthalt-EU card.

The Aufenthaltsdokument-GB was created via the Withdrawal Agreement and is valid for 10 years and provides permanent residence. Is there any risk the Withdrawal Agreement could be amended/withdrawn, affecting the Aufenthaltsdokument-GB?

If so, perhaps it would be safer to have a Niederlassungserlaubnis or Daueraufenthalt-EU? i.e. a document that is not dependent on the GB specific Withdrawal Agreement.
