Sofa buying

Hi, we're looking for sofas in what I'd loosely descibe as a traditional country style - squashy, high enough backs that support your head, upholstered in fabric not leather. We've looked at a couple of big furniture stores eg. Höffner but they have acres of contemporary style seating 'landscapes,' mostly leather, and mostly amazing uncomfortable.
Any suggestions for stores in or around Berlin?

That´s a difficult one, Feierabend!
I guess you need to go around all of the furniture places until you find just what you are looking for....

I will be in the market for a new sofa very soon, and will most definitely not be buying one without having sat on it beforehand! Some are hard and uncomfortable, like riding on a bus, whilst others are the "sink in" type and you need a ladder to get back out of them again!!!

Ikea do the sort of thing you describe. You might find something there.

We usually pick up major furniture second hand off eg.kleinanzeigen. People do have nice furniture that they buy and then change their minds about/don't really use. Buying such furniture seems less wasteful than getting new. Our current sitting furniture includes wing back chairs which are super comfy and provide good head support - they came 24 years ago with a chesterfield sofa from a car salesman in Croydon who had already owned them for 10 years, apparently. Brilliant.

Hope you find something suitable. I agree those landscape seating things are awkward and not especially comfortable in general.

Thanks, yes, Ikea sofas can be very good. I haven't got round there yet.
Yes, you have to sit on them! The hardness of some is really unbelieveable. The only range that we both fell in love with in Höffner for the comfort factor was actually leather, and just the single chair with an electrically controlled recliner, was c. 7000€ !

Chesterfields all the way here, but I agree with Kiplette's comment about checking eBay Kleinanzeigen. There are some real bargains out there, and new stuffing/cushioning can be bought from fabric stores at whichever level of support/comfort you prefer.

Last year I picked up 10 antique oak dining chairs for 20 euros each. They look beautiful (to me) and will definitely last decades longer than any Ikea purchase or chain store MDF furniture.

You could also try FB - people on pages like Sell & Buy Stuff Berlin sometimes sell all their furniture when they are moving back home, some items look remarkably little used. Worth a (cautious) try?
I'd also vouch for the quality of IKEA sofas - my first was from them and I only got rid of it because it was too large for the new place.

Yes, the Ikea sofas are decent quality, in fact I think our ancient one upstairs is an Ektorp which is still going strong and is comfy. They don't seem to do as many cover options as they used to. Haven't got round to visiting other suggested places yet, must make a day of it with my €49 ticket. (How exciting!)

If anybody is interested, we have settled for an Ikea Vimle, with pull-out sofabed.
the main reason for choosing this one is that the Ikea website actually lists the measurements and weight of all the separate packages that make up the whole sofa - this is particularly useful for us as we have a very steep and narrow staircase, with a kink in it at the top, and will have to carry each part up to the living room seperately ......

- because a friend of mine had a sofabed that pulls out just like the Vimle one, and it is a real bed, as opposed to parts of the sofa that you should lay on - not a fan of laying my head where others have parked their big-end, if you see what I mean?

That was the wise thing I should have done before going for the free second hand sofabed on ebay klein which proved too big to go through the final doorway after 2 staircases had been achieved.

A good point. As much as I know, Barsloev has a thin topper you spread over before putting sheets on it.

We've got a couple of large Korean sitting cushions to put there for our guests' posteriors.
