meant to add this quote, sorry.
"Dual citizen holders
If you’re a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship, you cannot apply for an ETA when you travel to the UK. Instead, you’ll need to prove your citizenship using:
A valid British passport.
A valid Irish passport.
Another valid passport containing a certificate of entitlement."

What a mess! More and more folks keep getting caught up in this not-so-pretty scenario. Other teens are stranded abroad.

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?
When I arrived on a British passport in Germany in 2006 everything was fine.
After Brexit, both my employer and my stadt were very confused as to what to do.
So, I officially switched from Orange to Green.
€60 (Irish passport) versus €329 (New British Boris Blue passport - then) may have clouded my bank manager's judgement.
Employer and stadt were very happy and just did an update on my EU nationality in their records.
As to the topic at hand...
If you've got a British passport, you've got a British passport.
What does dual nationality have to do with it?
It's madness.

You are fine if you are dual Irish/British, it is the only exception where you do not have to have to use a British passport to visit UK. Any other dual British/something else needs to have and use a British passport to enter UK now. Noo rools innit.

Which makes the Irish passport the most powerful passport in the Europe, and very close to the most powerful passport in the world.
As with an Irish passport will allow the holder, to work, live own property in the EU and the UK, no need no need for a second passport. You also get to several more counties with out a visa.
But of course its just a case of luck if you can get one or not.

And, just to be clear, British can relocate to Ireland and do this. Get same health/social/housing benefits as locals. And vote in most elections.

What is their plan after 5 years? Do they need to apply for citizenship if they want to stay? I assume after 5 years, they will have built up a life that they wouldn't want to leave behind just because the 5 years has ended.

Our friend wants to get freedom of movement and after his 5 years go somewhere warmer.
I suggested it to my brother who is very miffed to have lost his FOM but the 5 years would be more complicated for him.

A lot can happen and life can change in 5 years. At least that has been my experience. Still, having the option to go somewhere warmer is a nice goal. As long as the residency laws don't change.

Absolutely. His wife has the Irish anyway, and he'd only go if he got a suitable job there.
I have said I think he can go anywhere in Europe with his wife, as spouse of an EU person, but is that true if he has the job and she doesn't? That I'm not at all sure of.

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?
He has an expired UK passport and a valid German passport with a valid ETA.
Look near the top of page 2 of this thread, to read what he has.
Maybe its because he is using an already issued ETA from 2025 ? Maybe the next time he wants a re rewed ETA, he will find it hard ???
All of this is confusing .......

Indeed.
We could be running the World better than any President, Prime Minister, or Dictator, if we put our minds to it.
But we're always happy to just enjoy the craic, and leave politics to others.
Being three sheets to the wind always helps.
Mine's another Guinness! Hic!

So the ETA is valid for two years after (date of issue) standing up embarrassingly up against a blank wall taking selfies.
Spot on.yesterday wrote:Maybe its because he is using an already issued ETA from 2025?
That's the question we don't know.yesterday wrote:Maybe the next time he wants a renewed ETA, he will find it hard?
But @GoodGrape is good to go (or grape) until that renewal date in 2027.
Nice to see someone swinging a bat for someone else @yesterday.
Nice.

Yes earky ETAs were easy to get without lying. Later ones not so.
