Yesterday Paps and kid#2 took the trailer to fetch some wood.

A bit fell out on the way home, and the following 2 cars drove over the log and damaged their vehicles.

Because vehicle 2 was a company vehicle, the police were called and a fine for an improperly secured load levied.

Paps got in touch with the insurer of the trailer immediately and is waiting to hear from them.

Is that the correct insurance? Or should it rather be Haftpflicht?

Yes, the liability insurer (Haftpflicht) of the trailer is the correct insurance to contact, since the trailer was the reason of the damage: https://www.allianz.de/auto/anhaengerve ... anhaenger/
