Not enough space in my computer for updates

I got a message on my laptop the other day. It said there was not enough space left to allow important updates from Microsoft. Yet in checking the space left, I found I had at least 15.5 GBs. This seems more the enough. So whats going on?

Copy a large chunk of data on an external disk/usb memory stick, so that you have at least 50gigs free. Once the update ran through, copy that shit back on the hardisk.
One might consider an update as the right time to do a backup anyway.
