Insurance and pension payout after bereavement: tax and health insurance considerations?

Post by Kerfuffle »

I need to get my head three payouts:

firstly a life insurance payout following my husbands's death. UK policy payable on death only, this is not taxed in the UK and I hope not taxed here either as I cannot see that it falls under one of the seven categories of taxable income. Will it be subject to health insurance payments (I have manadatory insurance with TK)? Does it have to be reorted in any way and how?

secondly, I payout from a personal pension into which various employers made contributions. It is all a bit confusing because I think the insurance was passed from one provider to another but was definitively already in place in the 1990s. This is taxfree in the UK (based on a letter I have received) but will most likely be taxed here. But hen again maybe not because it is on old policy. What do I need to check to make sure? And how about health insurance: am I correct to assume that the payout will be divided by 120 and then I pay health and care insurance on that? Full rate or half rate? Also will benefit from the Freibetrag of 187,25 Euro every month or not?

Thirdly, regular payment of widow's pension. Not taxable in the UK but taxable here and subjext to health insurance at full rate? Would the Freibetrag be applicable here or not; I am aware I can only have it against one pension not both.

And last but not least: I need to understand my position with regards to Krankenversicherung der Rentner once I take my pension in Germany, specifically whether I will be mandatorily or voluntarily insured. I had some years were I earned above the threshold but not necessarily for the whole year. Is the health insurance able and supposed to work this out for me in advance as it may well make a diffeence to retiring at 63, 67 or anytime in between.

Really grateful for any input.
