What is the best way to deliver a rental agreement termination letter?

Is it best to deliver the letter in person, perhaps with a witness?

Or send it via post with tracking so you can prove it was delivered.

I'm trying to ensure there is no chicanery from the Hausverwaltung.

Via German Post with tracking (enschreiben) is always recommended.

Ok I'll keep this in mind. I assume the delivery receipt is proof enough if the landlord tries any shenanigans.

They could claim the the "Einschreiben" was delivered but contained just the frontside of a Kellog's Cornflakes box.

So,

1.) Create the letter as a PDF File.
2.) Send this to a friend (via email) who has a printer, and ask him/her to print it twice.
3.) Put one copy in an envelope, ask the friend to keep the other copy, and then go with this friend to the post office and send the envelope by "Einschreiben".

You have now proof that ...

a.) a letter was sent (as you have a delivery receipt)
b.) can even proof what the letter was (as you have a friend as witness who even has a copy of what was sent)

If the Hausverwaltung is in walking distance, you two could even throw that letter into their mailbox, as you have a witness that it was thrown in the mailbox.

When a former employer wanted to fire someone, the office wrote a letter and my supervisor and I both had to read it before we put it in an envelope. We then took it to the guys house and I took a picture of my supervisor putting it in the guys mailbox. The office had also given us another letter to fill out stating that we had put this envelope containing this letter we had both seen, in the guys mailbox and the date and time we did it.

Einschreiben can cause a problem if whoever is getting the letter refuses it or nobody is available to sign for it at the time it is delivered. Somebody once tried to send me something in einschreiben while I was on vacation and it was bounced back to the sender. This can lose you time and cause your cancellation to no longer be timely. You can also send it via einschreiben einwurf where the post verifies that the letter you sent was delivered to the proper mailbox. You would still have to have a friend witness which letter was in the envelope you sent though.
