UK student loan - tax-deductible

Post by fro90 »

Hi folks.

For the past couple of years, I have been entering my UK student loan into my German tax return - all fine and well. The interest I have been deducting as normal in full, converted to EUR on a monthly basis using the official rates. In addition, I am deducting the portion of the repayment which goes towards repaying the tuition fees.

The German tax office initially rejected my tax return some years ago, but upon appealing my tax return, they allowed the deduction. Since then, it has been fine... until now. I got a letter today from the Finanzamt (probably since I applied for a reduction in income tax - Lohnsteuerermäßigung - for 2025) telling me that the repayment of "Studiengebühren" is not a tax-deductible expense. I already told them in the application that I am applying the deduction as per the Abflussprinzip § 11 Abs. 2 EStG.

Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks so much in advance.
