Ummeldung, travel & social benefits

Hi everyone :)

We're a couple, both EU citizens, with 2 kids, 3 yrs and 3 months old, respectively, the latter born in May this year. I'm unemployed as of April receiving Elterngeld (and Kindergeld). My husband has a contract until the end of November and is scheduled to receive Elterngeld in December 2024 and Mar 2025. So, except those months, he will get unemployment money from the end of his contract on. We are currently looking for jobs outside Germany so we don't know yet when we are leaving.

We received a notice for Eigenbedarf on our apartment and will have to be out by November. It's been complicated to find an apartment given our future social situation and uncertainty.

We are considering to travel for some time before the actual move to a new apartment, but this would mean we would have a period of void where we would be without an address in Germany during that travel. Renting an Airbnb or similar during that time would not make sense as we would not be around.

My questions are:

- how long can we be without an ummeldung address in Germany? (this would determine how long we plan to travel - can we travel at all?!)
- do we loose the above-mentioned social benefits during this time?

Thanks in advance!
InesPT

PS- I say ummeldung but if we change municipality (which is also possible) it would have to be a new anmeldung.

May I just add, I found this online (please see below) but it doesn't state anything more specific about my case:

"Whether you’re moving to Germany to live, work or study, anmeldung becomes a mandatory step under the following circumstances;

If your stay in Germany is longer than 3 months i.e. you’re not a tourist
If you’re already registered in Germany and are relocating elsewhere for a period exceeding 6 months (Ummeldung in case of relocation in the same city under the jurisdiction of the same registration office.) – Source: German Law"

Hi again everyone,

The L-bank finally picked up the phone and I am sharing the answer to this in case it’s helpful to anyone else.

You can do holidays as much as you want during Elternzeit and you will not loose Elterngeld by being abroad. BUT if you do an Abmeldung to be abroad without having an official address in Germany even if your absence is temporary, you will loose Elterngeld.

I didn’t ask the Agentur für Arbeit but am assuming the same is true for unemployment money.
