I have been binge watching these three hilarious Irish lads the last couple of weeks. Their sketches are so clever and funny. And they take my mind off the horrible news of late, too.

Oh, lovely, thanks!
So true. I was in National School in Ireland over a period of about 3 years. Compulsory Irish every day. You'd learn off poems, compositions and tables of declensions by heart. (Think you're badly off with four in German? Irish has seven!)
I wasn't any worse than the Irish kids, none of them had a clue either what we were babbling on about as English was their mother tongue too. And it was all taught through direct method, the teachers were not supposed to translate to English so you were somehow expected to absorb the meaning through repetition and example. My mum was a teacher and used to rage about the system, that it was making kids hate this beautiful language.
Hopefully things are better in schools now, and there has been a huge revival in pride and interest in the language and culture over the last few decades. But the lads in this sketch aren't exactly ancient!
I can still recite various lists perfectly, and am sure will melt hearts when I move back this year and greet the people with "Mise Éire, sine mé ná an Chailleach Bhérra!"
