Well, if you already spent 700-1400 EUR on the iPhone you might consider as well to pay for Apple Care+, it goes from 9 EUR all the way up to 15 EUR a month depending on your iPhone model and if you just want to protect the phone against accidental damage or you want to include lost or getting stolen. If you buy an iPhone SE (which make sense for a teenager) it starts from 4,50 EUR a month. And to be honest, the Apple service is really good in terms of this. You make an appointment, which you can get for the next day, you walk into the store and if it is fixable they do it in around four hours and if it is not you walk out with a new device. In some cases you might have to pay 29 EUR (to stop people from breaking the phone intentionally). I think that since some teenagers, specially boys, tend to damage things, this is a pretty good service to consider.


P.S., The current price of an iPhone 15 at Amazon starts at 770 EUR, not 950 EUR. Prices always go down a bit during summer because new phones will be introduced in September. Directly at the Apple Store they almost never reduce prices though.

I think apple does offer a lot of value in sum way, for example, apple give good security updates for about 5 years, which is very good if you are concerned about security issues. You can just buy and apple, put it in your pocket and use it when you want.

Sure Samsung has started to offer longer security updates, but mainly on the higher end products, the cheaper android phones, only offer security updates for a couple of years, if that.

Sure the specifications and features are different between different phones, so you have to know what u want before u buy, if u want value, which is hard I know.

Phon development has really slowed down in the last couple of years, I do not find the need for updates, because, not much has changed.

For me security updates, are important, so I got a more expensive android last time, but after several months of using it, I still prefer to use my old phone, kids will of course just want the newest and best.

Adults are not really the ones who should decide but the adults have the money.

The statement "everyone has iPhone" was made several times. I pointed out that one of her friend, recently arrived Afghan refugee we happen to know, probably doesn't. Like the children ofa colleague of mine in school with her, whose family I know well, don't have iPhone. The answer was
"oh but they aren't in the group of teens I look up to, so they don't really count".

It looks like you are more interested in winning arguments.

"everyone has an iphone" has done the rounds here too. You'd think kids spend all their time researching what everyone else is up to. I'll add a couple of favourites from my household:
"everyone else plays Call of Duty [GTA or other 18 rated game]"
"everyone else stays up until at least midnight"
"everyone else is allowed to watch [any 18 rated film]"

oh, and in addition to knowing what everybody does, my kids also know what no-one does:
"nobody has to do this homework"
"nobody has to tidy up"

I could go on.
Don't buy into those dreams. As many have said, offer to contribute the "usual" amount, and if they wants anything "better" they can earn it.

Better still, they could use the money they earn to do something way better/more interesting, than have a marginally more useful telephone/IT platform.
It is also worth mentioning that their peers (real ones, but in particular those online folk who seem to exert so much influence) often exaggerate.

The refugees don't have it, sounds like what my mom would say when I didn't like some food. Just think of the starving children in Africa

As for the group of teens she looks up to, there are two points to that. 1) Why do you look up to them? Because they have iphones? 2) Do you think you will be accepted by them if you have an iphone? See viewtopic.php?p=3599#p3599

Apple continues its security updates for much longer than Android, which is why my chap switched from Android to iPhone. I this world of hacking and spam, and if you want to keep the device for a long time, this is useful.

As a side note, my original iPad, bought in 2011, still works and is used by my ex-husband.

It does end, but the road is long, not gonna lie

Now our lot, all in their 20s, are very aware of cost/performance etc, and although they vary with what they'll spend, none of them buy into the fast fashion scene, and none of them is replacing perfectly useable devices annually to 'fit in' or whatever. So I think our ebay/lets check the Zweitmarkt first culture has rubbed off reasonably well on them.

Although kid#4's first paycheck did go on a very magnificent and new Lego AT-AT walker, which is neither practical or necessary

Back in the day, my son wanted a mobile because everyone had one. I told him to use theirs then. At the time, I didn't have one.

That was before smart phones and tracking and the parents who gave their kids one thought that they always knew where they were. What a joke. They really believed it and some of them gave me a hard time.

Still I think u need to look at what the kid needs to do with the phone

If the kids friends chat a lot on facetime, then an android will just not do it. So either the kid has to pursued the other friends to use non facetime software or the kid maybe left out of conversations, because the kid does not have an iphone.

I have this with my family, they all have iphones, and I have an android and they all use facetime, of course they try to include me in conversations, but I always get the feeling that sometimes because I do not have facetime, I am left out of some chats.

The kid may have a point, if Android, will not really do the job of app chatting, then it does not matter how cheap the Android is.

Apple doing this, is a reason why I do not like them too much, but I know it will may them a lot of money, by not providing and Android client.

Sometimes it is nice for parents to understand kid‘s preferences for whatever reason. In this case, Alberto’s daughter will never be happy with anything other than an iPhone. If it’s affordable, new or second hand, given the problems she’s had, maybe this ‘win‘ for her is very important. Gratitude will likely not last all too long, though every glimmer is nice for the parents.
