I always thought that it was a reference to Noddy and Big Ears - characters thought up by Enid Blyton - who lived in Toytown, where everything was perfectly neat and tidy.

Re: What's up in the Middle
"The site was originally created in August 2002 as "Toytown Munich". The name originated from the observation that Munich was an unusually clean, well-organised, and crime-free city. In mid-2006, the site merged with Britboard, another expatriate site geared toward British expatriates in Germany. Shortly thereafter a decision was made to expand to cover all of Germany and the name was changed to reflect this."nina_glyndwr wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2024 8:14 pm I always thought that it was a reference to Noddy and Big Ears - characters thought up by Enid Blyton - who lived in Toytown, where everything was perfectly neat and tidy.

You better get going providing content AND a motto, because otherwise...kaffeemitmilch wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 10:03 am Hmm, I'm surprised Frankfurt doesn't have its own sub-section.

Re: What's up in the Middle
There used to be a Frankfurt or Rhein-Main page back in the day run by Moondancer, but that's long gone. I believe Frankfurt is too much of a transient city for people to get very involved in something like toytown. It's full of younger people now who come to work or study for a few years and then move on. They also communicate in other ways and they have their own groups to meet with.
I live about 40 kilometres south-east of Frankfurt and, although I used to go in fairly regularly, I have little reason to go there these days.

Glad you found us! Welcome back!
What was your name on the former board or have I just forgotten your name? Highly probable.

So, there's an election watch party in Frankfurt on the 5th/6th. If you're interested, message me and I'll give you the details to RSVP. It will be near the Hbf.

Re: What's up in the Middle
Ooh, nice. As a result of visiting the Welterbe site at Bad Wilhelmshöhe (really quite middle) I was looking at other Welterben in Germany and came across the whole Moravian thing you've got going there in Herrenhut.
Looks like a nice place to live. What has you living in that corner, if that's OK to ask?

Re: What's up in the Middle
So, Nicksachsen, have you learnt Sorbian? Isn't that your neck of the woods? Sounds interesting. I think linked to Kiplette's comment, it's some sort of Moravian/Ur-Slavic language.
You're definitely in the middle though, just the opposite end of the middle to me, if that makes any sense (Belgium is near here).

Re: What's up in the Middle
The language you are refering to is spoken by less than 10.000 people in Germany.
It is even less common than Rhaeto-Romance in Switzerland.
Just saying. I mean, it is a little bit like asking a guy from Houston if he speaks Texas German.

Re: What's up in the Middle
Learning German has been enough for me, thanks!
No need to try and get my head around a Slavic language.

Sure, no problem to ask.kiplette wrote: ↑Fri Jun 20, 2025 7:43 pm Ooh, nice. As a result of visiting the Welterbe site at Bad Wilhelmshöhe (really quite middle) I was looking at other Welterben in Germany and came across the whole Moravian thing you've got going there in Herrenhut.

I work with a Christian organisation that networks across Europe. Previously was in Llanelli, South Wales UK, which is beautiful but not so central when working across Europe.
