Request for help from the community

Post by thegermanylist »

Hi all,
After living here over 10 years I'm finally working on something I've thought of for a long time. A friend of mine and I are building a directory of English-speaking businesses and services in Germany. While we both speak decent enough German and believe it's important to learn when living here, we have a few reasons we felt this directory should exist.

• When foreigners first move to Germany and don't yet know German, it's difficult to find things. The directory should make it easier.
• English-speaking small businesses and services have a hard time with SEO in German markets. This should make them easier to find. Hopefully it becomes well-known enough that people go there before google.
• There are other such directories but mostly dedicated to relocation services, banks, and other things needs for the move. But nothing where you know that the business will cater to English.
• Many recommendations are hidden inside facebook groups and other forums. Toytown going offline is a good example of why it would be nice to have a permanent directory somewhere.

So, if you yourself have a business that is English-friendly, or you know of one, please add it to our listings by clicking "Add a business" at the top of the website. You'll find the URL in my signature.

... and then to sell them your service to create web sites and SEO services for them?

Yeah, right.

Both ladies behind that list (Eleanor and Lindsey) work as web designers, so it is kind of obvious that this is just a sales pitch.

Stop that, this place is not a free advertisement platform.

No, we won't be selling our services to people who list on the directory. I actually don't have services to sell as I'm currently not working as a web designer (and I've never sold SEO services). We both simply wanted to use our skills on a passion project and build this website out.

Listing on the directory is free and while this is an "ad" to let people know about the directory, we are not using it as a lead generator and definitely wouldn't contact people who submit their business to try and sell them things.

I would buy that if you had chosen “LisaSmith” or “Honeymoon23” as your name on this forum, and that your hobbies are knitting and baking and biking and hiking; and then mentioned that you are working on a side project, a company directory.

But with the name “TheGermanList” it's already too intrusive and obvious what this is about.

Just stop it.

You might also look at www.thelocal.de to see if you aren't too late for the show anyway.

I was contacted by the original poster, asking for the account to be deleted. OK.

Just to make it clear, the individuals behind this idea of a business list are welcome to be members of this forum as individuals, but not as a business.

If this forum would be a pub, be aware that you're standing at the beer counter right now, not at the sales counter.
