Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
OK, my son is planning to move to Hamburg in February for a new apprenticeship. He has found some short term Wgs that are really attractive. So he can look around and find something when he knows the place a bit better. But, ha. Most are too attractive and sound really dodgy to me Too cheap, too lovely. Does anyone have any advice for him? Thanks.

Re: Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
I remember two folks on the old TT residing in Hamburg, John G. and Tor.
While John G. is handling his health issues, as far as I am aware, one could try to get ahold of Tor.
Does anybody of the old crew have a way to contact him?
I am just thinking loud, to be honest...

Re: Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
He sings tenor, and has been in the chorus at the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth and survived the cull a couple of years back, so checking the chorus list, I think he is [redacted by EditorL].
I did have his address and everything, having sent him some pink elastic for his face masks during covid, but of course all that useful information was lost on old TT.
I think Metall might know him?
Honestly, I thought he was on here.
Oh, turns out he's on FB. First hit using his name. And linkedin, if that's better.

Re: Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
We at hTTi have invested a lot of brainpower on this... The logo emphasizes that the site belongs to us, and not to a sleezy guy with the intention of making a profit, no matter how... That's why the "own" is higlighted... So please, no blasphemy here on this...
Re: Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
So, is anyone trying to get the former TT member TOR on board?
I took the liberty to redact his real name from this thread.
Mentioning real names of former TT members is not OK in my book.

Hi,
the housing market in HH is really tough. There is no trick other than to use common sense. If if sounds to good to be true..
Show up to every viewing with a Schufa and a work or University contract.
There are a couple of WG and Wohnung pages on FB that people seem to like.

Re: Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
Thanks Tor. The problem being he is still working here and has only a week before new placement. And he is young and inexperienced (this is a diplomatic way of describing him). Deciding on probably Air BNB for minimum a month as it is at least flexible. Have decided on ones where you just get a room and share with a family or similar. Has all the Schufa and stuff. It is tough and expensive so really has to be there and look at places. He does have one or two friends which should help but they really have no space. And I thought Munich was bad. Will be a learning experience for him, at least. Will let you know how it goes!
Re: Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
I've been since 2013 just next to Hamburg. Even built our house there (here?) in 2019.
I'm sure nobody is surprised: there's a huge gradient, in term of cost, between the city and the outside area.
The west, where I happen to be, is less expensive than Hamburg
The east even less expensive than the west.
And east and west can easily have quality of life better than the city.
The south (south of the Elbe), like Harburg, Niedersachsen, is much less expensive. But for obvious reason: because nothing is there, and the few people who happen to live there most likely have to cross the Elbe every morning, either by underground tunnel (if driving: make sure you cross before 6am, or after 7pm, otherwise the traffic...) or by ferry, not fun. I have colleagues with very good finances that decided to live in the south and are very happy, they say quality of family life there is better, I'm skeptical though...
And of course the further you go the lesser the cost. This is obvious of course, though I was/am still surprised by the crazy magnitue of the price drop. And of course is true for both: buying or renting.
But everyone who's ever looked at housing in/near Hamburg knows this already.

Re: Finding accomodation for Students long or short term
So, just an update. Son found flat at reasonable for Hamburg rent, very near the Hbf. Short walk to work, and college. Of course, dodgy area, but balanced by a huge police presence. He is loving it /so far) Thanks for all your helpful advice.
