Today's investment

Post by Alberto »

Crazy falling.
In one month my portfolio lost ca 8% (my portfolio is was aggressive, on purpose, because I'm still very far from retirement. All in all I still think I'm taking wise choices)
How you all doing?

Amazon and Intel reported bad numbers last week, the unemployment rate in the USA is rising, and bad quarterly numbers are foreseen for other companies. The current situation in the Middle East doesn’t help, and - btw - there is a war in Europe…

Oh, and then there is Boeing.

What I'm hearing and reading about the latest in a nutshell -

"European stock markets joined a global selloff on Monday morning, but seemed set to avoid the massive tumble seen in Asia, where Japan's Nikkei index lost over 12% amid fears about a possible U.S. recession."

I assume your portfolio has now bounced back? In a few years this short ride will barely noticeable on the chart. Hopefully you didn't sell any of your positions.

Who would sell when it's down???

Oh yes, people who bought stocks in their margins and have to sell when down. I've never done that. I'm sure Alberto hasn't, either.

Also people who invested money they need in the short term (which you should never do), people who think they can time the market by selling during a dip and buying back at the bottom (impossible to know the future), people who are scared it's the BIG ONE and don't have the stomach to see their portfolio drop by 50%.

People buy high and sell low. When the market goes up people have confidence and buy. When it goes down they panic and sell.

"selling during a dip and buying back at the bottom"

Definition of stupidity.

Unless one has a lot of insider info which is illegal.

I aim to make my 1st ever sale from investment 20yr from now. I do look at the market (which I know well most gurus recommended NOT to do, and generally I think this is for most people good advice), but I look at it for fun actually, I'm a data nerd, comes from my profession.

oh my god Canada Life is the company offering the pension fund of my wife...their fund have super high costs and deciding to quit with them means having to pay good bunch of your saving in the fund as penalties...making the opting out a meaningless option

40% increase this year, or 40% increase over the last 35 years?

40% return over 15yr is actually bad, probably even lost against inflation. Most boring no-frill indexes probably outperformed it by crazy amounts.

Edit:
just had a quick look: the SP500, the single index I look most at. End of 2009 was at ca 1100, today 15yr later it's 5900, so it grew >550% in the last 15yr.
In these same 15 yr the NASDAQ grew from 2300 to 19500, so almost 850% growth.
DJ from 10500 to 42500, 400% growth.

Bad day today at the game.
My portfolio dropped 0.84% today.
Normally there's a very obvious reason, today I haven't understood it yet
