At the secondary school that I attended, only if you were really good at French, were you permitted to attend evening classes to learn German!
I was absolutely useless at French, and have ended up living in Germany and speaking pretty good German, whilst a school friend of mine, who was permitted to learn German, now lives in Scotland, and only ever speaks English!
Isn´t it strange how life turns out?
