Having spent several years freelancing in Germany while barely speaking the language, I put together a list of deductions that took me too long to find out about.
Pendlerpauschale: 38 cents per km for commuting to a regular client or co-working space, even if you mostly work from home.
Homeoffice-Pauschale: 1260 euros flat rate per year just for working from home, no receipts needed.
Internet costs: up to 20 euros per month as a proportional share if you use it for work.
Berufsverband membership: any professional association fees are fully deductible.
Most of this I discovered late, after a Steuerberater pointed out what I had been leaving on the table. The numbers add up fast.
I got frustrated enough to start building a small tool for this:*** It is a Telegram bot that tracks expenses, decodes Finanzamt letters in English, and sends reminders before quarterly deadlines. Free if anyone wants to try it.
Anyone else have deductions they wish they had known about sooner?
