Humm, NT 4, used a lot of programmers from the Digital equipment line, that were being made redundant from the DEC. A lot of DEC secrets were built into NT 4.

The first computers I used for work were Digital machines, I still remember using them, everything worked as it should do, no crashes, comprehensive file management, efficient and safe memory usage etc etc etc.

What are you talking about? Sure, you are right and I fixed the typo/blunder in the original post, it is indeed 30 years ago, not 40.

Humm, NT 4, used a lot of programmers from the Digital equipment line, that were being made redundant from the DEC. A lot of DEC secrets were built into NT 4.

Well, one top-notch software architect from DEC was hired by Microsoft in 1988, to be the chief architect for their future technology, I am talking about Dave Cutler. A lot of design features of Windows NT were based on his "experience" with DEC VMS. And yes, he (eventually) pulled a lot of former DEC engineers into his team.

I remember that - at that time (early 90ies) - some people said that the solution to the world wide illegal drug problem is simple: Declare them legal, but only as long as DEC is the sole marketing entity for those substances (because that will surely make'm unatractive to anybody in the long run).

I don't want to brag, but I met him (Dave Cutler) in the flesh at the RTM-Party for Windows NT 3.1 in 1993 at the MS campus, as I was employee of MS in Redmond at that time. Oh, those were the days....

Oh, is it bragging time? My ex was buying a lot of equipment from DEC for his company back in the day. They invited us to come stay on the QEII for a computer show. It was anchored in the Boston Harbor. Nice memories. They also paid a nice trip for us to San Francisco.

I also chatted to Andreas von Bechtolsheim at the ice cream table after the above ceremony.

Well I never met anyone famous, but I have met plenty of people who think they should be famous, like all of us

I was using DEC computers from about 87 until about 2016. Even thou is was all over for DEC in about 1997. DEC was a very mice computer system to work on.

To rub it in I'll list a few Nobel prize winners:

Ernst Otto Fischer - for Chemistry (my father spent a year 1966/67 in Munich with him).
I actually telephoned with him whilst I was in Munich back in the late 1980s, shortly before my father passed away.
Fischer was very surprised to hear me speaking German.

Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin - for Chemistry (structure Vitamin B12). My father ran the
crystalography group at Manchester University & she came several times to visit.
As a school kid I had no idea what it was all about. Maybe my father should have explained in simple terms.

Vladimir Prelog - for Chemistry (had dinner at our house I believe).

Burt Richter - for Physics. The only one I met off my own bat so to speak.
He visited our control room at DESY (JADE collaboration) & let me explain our data acquisition system.
A very quiet unassuming guy.

I wrote a letter to Irene ( Santiago)
I sent a registered letter to an old childhood friend Ken Philby , enclosing photos and asking him to return them!
( God knows which photos and why return!!!)
I got accepted for a job at a school in Calle Corrientes after they played a tape of me in a laboratory!!

Oh, if the thread is about today... erm, we had breakfast at Lukas in leipzig and used eye drops about 10 times and Mandy ( little dog ) did a dumpez-vous three times!

Assuming you mean THE Ken Philby, what sort of thing did you write to him/send him photos about? A shared interest in joint military manoeuvres in the English channel? Photos of politicians in hotels?
Did the wrong guy run away to Russia?

I think the famous K Philby was Kim (Real name Harold Adrian) not Ken.

So hopefully John isn't the sixth member of the Cambridge five.

BUT: THE right hand man of K. Philby, the spy back then at the time he was denounced by Margaret Thatcher, is alive and well and living in our Cretan village, is called Christopher and is a Rembrandt scholar who used to lecture at Cambridge!

On this day, 25 years ago, the first email about one of the towers being on fire reached my work desk.

It was just a few minutes after the first hit. 5 to 8 minutes before 1400 (German local time).

It wasn't even on the news yet. The true horror unfolded in the hours to come...

I was walking on the Charles Bridge in Prague and an Irish punk kid asked if we were American and told us what had just happened. Went to our hotel room and watched CNN for hours in horror and disbelief.

A sad day, indeed.

I was the speech therapist at a junior high school in Lawrence, KS and I got there about 10:15 am (9:15 on the east coast) and a kid came up to me and said "Mrs.B., planes are flying into buildings in NY and fire and explosions are happening!" and I responded with "You shouldn't make a joke like that!" She said "but it's not a joke" while directing me to the library where the TVs were on, as they were in each classroom. Then later I had to go around the block to the elementary school and we hid the truth from the kids and did our best to pretend ike the world was normal. Meantime, we had friends who worked in affected buildings and relatives in NY who watched it all happening. My cousin at NYU managed to walk back home. What a horrible day that was. I'll never forget it.
