There are some rule changes being implemented starting with this world cup, FYI:

The 5 second for a goal kick seems sensible, but is likely to add controversy as it is entirely up to the ref when to start the 5 seconds.

The increased use of VAR is baffling too.

The opening match resulted in 3 red cards. That is highly unusual. Hope this will not become a trend. The hydration breaks were invented to show commercials in the US. In Germany luckily not.

We're here in the thread "Live events"... What's the next game we'll watch (kind of) together?

OK, tonight, ARD, 1900, Germany's first game in this tournament.

Against Curacao.

Which has 156,000 inhabitants, that's a tenth of Munich's inhabitants.

Sounds like fun. Less that two hours to go.

Why? Brazil won the world championship five times... Curacao delivered proof that they play on the same level.

The Japanese fans picked up rubbish and left the stadium spotless as they normally do. I love them!!!

Great result for Cape Verde. I knew where it was (unlike Curacao, which I thought was just the name of a 1980s drink until they qualified for the world cup).

I am quite surprised by "France vs. Senegal", 0:0 after half time...

First match in a group usually is like that.
Except if you are Germany.

Good second half from England last night. A bit worried by the defence though.
Winning that comfortably against Croatia should be a good sign (in fact, considering the strength of the opposition, that was arguably the best performance by any team in the first round of games), but it never pays to be too optimistic with England.
