Re: What to do when a parent is in critical condition in hospital…

Just to let you know, when my mother was in hospital, albeit in England, when the doctor phoned us up to ask us about her views on life support etc, he said that we would not be the ones to make the decision. The doctors themselves make the decision of which measures to use to keep the person alive ...

Re: Inheritance tax on UK inheritance

I will be interested to see if the UK Inland Revenue or the German Finanzamt are quicker at processing my paperwork. The UK had more pages and a more complicated form (because of my other relatives who were also inheriting), the German form had lots of gaps where their questions can't be answered f...

I didn’t get my postal vote although I was assured last Wednesday that it had been posted. Wish I’d gone for a proxy vote.

Re: Why I should buy iPhone to my teenager?

Apple continues its security updates for much longer than Android, which is why my chap switched from Android to iPhone. I this world of hacking and spam, and if you want to keep the device for a long time, this is useful. As a side note, my original iPad, bought in 2011, still works and is used by ...

Yebbut after I did that I ended up with “Letzte Generation” as my highest result. I’m a bit too old and boring to glue myself to a runway.

Glad to see that the AFD was my lowest score though.

I think the NHS used to count as that, when in the EU, but I don’t know the post-Brexit situation.

Moving to the UK - my husband's private health insurance

Hello everyone, I am hoping that one of the wise heads on here (Panda, Gary) might know the answer to this one. My German husband and I are planning to move to the UK next year. He has had Private Health Insurance for decades now and has been overpaying so that the bills don't go up too much in the ...

Re: Could I go back to the UK?

When a UK citizen has been paying said taxes all of their life in order to receive the health care, I can see why it rubs the wrong way when a "foreigner" can get the same benefits after only being there a short time. Having said that, I have no idea how long one has to wait after moving ...

Re: Inheritance tax on UK inheritance

It would never occur to me not to tell the Finanzamt about my inheritance if it is something they have a right to know about/tax. After all, I can't complain about public services if I am not paying my fair share. I will be interested to see if the UK Inland Revenue or the German Finanzamt are quick...

Re: Could I go back to the UK?

Yes they do, as they don’t want family hangers-on living off the state.

Mind you, the NHS surcharge is cheap as chips - the year cost is less than my chap’s private health insurance in DE for one month!

Re: Could I go back to the UK?

I’m going back next year after 11 years here - and my German husband is coming. The main reason for me, apart from being a bit fed up with German bureaucracy, is the health insurance costs for me here once I retire. I can retire immediately but my UK rental income and savings mean big €€€€€ for heal...

Re: Inheritance tax on UK inheritance

So with mega thanks to Panda I posted the German Inheritance tax forms to the NRW Finanzamt responsible (Krefeld) this morning, a nice fat envelope. I filled in the main form as well as I could (some things don't match) and then I did the individual form for me and my husband did one for himself. I ...

Re: Inheritance tax on UK inheritance

Filled in the whole form provisionally and realised this isn't all I need to do as nowhere does it say what inheritance tax I have had to pay. So I have found Anlage Erwerber which I will need to fill in. Of course it asks for information which I don't have but I will do my best. We paid the IHT yes...

Re: Inheritance tax on UK inheritance

So, an update. Last weekend I went to the UK with all my completed UK Inheritance Tax forms. It was actually all fairly easy once I had a nice excel spreadsheet to calculate everything and to tell me what Box number to put everything in. I went through it all with my sister. I didn't have all the fi...

Will be interesting to see the reaction when they find out about my velomobile - where some chaps can cruise at 50 km/h without motor. Me, a lady in her 50s, only manages 35km/h. My motor switches off at 25 as it has to, and I don’t wear a helmet.

If you have a VPN, UK’s Channel 4 shows TdeF highlights of 1 hour each day of the tour, and I think some of the other Grand Tours too if they have the rights.

Re: Taxing States

Regarding depreciation, now I am drifting away, the only downside of the German way is the 50 years of stretch. Still better than the UK way, which doesn't allow any depreciation: https://www.ingletonpartners.com/insights/rental-income-and-mortgage-interest-deduction/ I guess that’s because British...
