Re: sun screen for 3x2 south west facing window

:D Until I read FF's practical and elegant solutions I was going to recommend - two windscreen thingies stuck together with black and nasty, attached to the frame with masking tape or a white sheet trapped in the top of the window. Those are our current solutions for the problem, neither practical n...

Same problem here. If it is not visible on the surface at first glance, it's not there.

Re: becoming a UK non resident for tax matters

Colin. Have you told your UK tax advisor that you live in Berlin and have done so for a long time? If you have been here more than half the year each year, then you are tax resident in Germany. This is not a matter of choice. Unless you are not anmelded and have no right to live here at all, in whic...

Re: Gardening

Thus far, no problems, but I am way behind you, so that's not necessarily meaningful.

You have had massive crops in the past - were they bought plants, or your own grown from seed ones?

Re: Money-saving tipps

How long did the hot water run while you removed the watering cans? Where did you put them? What did you use it for? Quite a long time - it's a big house, and the water is travelling a long way. We would get at least one 20l watering can - used by me for flushing the loo in the room next door (so n...

Re: Money-saving tipps

Yes, the helpful price per kilo makes that comparison so easy and some of the reduced labels show the new price per kilo after reduction, which is brilliant. Some stuff is way cheaper in our Turkish shops, some stuff not so much. We are strict about length of showering, we used to use watering cans ...

Re: Gymnasium 8th grade voluntary Wiederholung

dstanner's point about Mündliche is a biggie. Kid#4 scraped a very scrapy Abi largely because he didn't really join in. He eventually learned to do the minimum, therefore the pass, but in his group of sweaty gaming lads, 4 had to repeat at the end and 3 didn't make it the second time around because ...

Re: confusion over german inheritance

Oh well spotted pappnase. If granny/great granny is dead already, the power of attorney died with her. I had my Dad's and he was suddenly trying to get me to do stuff in his last weeks and after he died and I realised he hadn't made himself a new will, it became clear why he'd been so urgent about i...

Re: Gardening

I think the Eisheiligen thing is no longer a real marker what with climate change and all. They are Saints Days in the middle of May, associated with the last frost, but for example this year, I think that's what stung us 2 weekends ago, and this week planting out seems safe to do. A brilliant thing...

Re: I don't want to qualify for a German pension...

But if you call or use the code online to claim your pension that is not a question. They may then send you a form CF901 to complete to enable DWP to start the claim process for you in Germany or wherever but if you don't send that form back then they won't chase you for it. Brilliant. So if Nina d...

Re: I don't want to qualify for a German pension...

Well, the people in the UK know that I live in Germany as they send me the request for payment every year around this time. I got the latest request about a week or two ago. Lots of people live here without building up a pension. So that isn't a thing. And if on that form you have to put that you w...

Not connected with gardening at all, but following the tomato bus stop adventure I asked my people to go fetch a free sofa bed last weekend. In similar vein, looks were deceiving and it is super solid and heavy, and suffice it to say I have had my ebay privileges revoked by my sons ;)

On a more positive note, one of my oldies yesterday asked if I'd like a pot of tomato plants she had going :)

So I was able to tell the tale of the tomato shelter/bus stop which gave them all a good laugh

And now I have some bigger lovelies ready to go in when the snow/frost goes away!

Re: Could I go back to the UK?

the NHS surcharge is cheap as chips You are not wrong, in comparison to German private health insurance, but these charges are made regardless of income - particularly galling for nurses who come to the NHS to work from overseas and are on a relatively low wage. Here they'd be on a much lower charg...

Re: Could I go back to the UK?

A British husband and a combined income of more than 30,000 quid, rising to 38 within a year. Plus more for a kid. And the visa itself costs nearly 2000. So difficult for people. Currently about half of the people who want it can't afford it, and after the raises that will be about 70%. Trying to li...

Yes, I had no idea until this thread came up that this specific phrase had such connotations. Done the Einbürgerungstest, not an Integrationkurs. Nothing like that was mentioned on the app. The kids are just now talking about Höcke and his use of the phrase. To them it is completely obvious that the...
