Re: Finally accepting an offered seat on the tram

Is this the beginning of the end? One has to accept that the human TBO is around 40 years. Its like with a car - after some time one needs new parts - I need a new wheel bearing (arthritus in the right hip). Means after I fly a visitor I can get out of the glider OK but someone else has to walk the...

Re: Finally accepting an offered seat on the tram

It is/was normal in Germany for children to get a free slice of Schinkenwurst when they go shopping with mom/dad at the butcher. This stops at some point, usually around the time when hair starts to grow in places where there wasn't any before. Up 'ere kids often get what I believe is called a &quo...

Re: German husband moving abroad

I am not a lawyer, but the key is the phrase "deutschen Staatsangehörigen". Your husband is a "deutscher Staatsangehöriger" as long as he has a German Passport. Its the other way around - a person can have a German passport as long as he/she is a German citizen (similar goes for...

Re: Whats up in the North?

It rained up here a LOT last week & there is a considerable amount of water on our runway. In addition the grass is growing & due to the soft ground we cannot get the tractor out to cut the grass... Anyhow - I used the good weather over the weekend to wash & polish the glider (with some ...

Re: What is different in Germany?

while in the UK there is no specific "health tax". Its part of "National Insurance" (NI). This is a misconception. Many UK residents, pensioners and some more, pay income tax but not NI. Yet they're entitled to health care. No its not. I confirmed that there is no specific "...

Germany does a number of things according to the motto "Why do things simple when complicated can be made to work almost as well?".

Examples: Taxation, health insurance...

Re: Lost passport about to travel...

We flew to France on Monday. Never had to show any ID in any form at airports or on 2 flights. I was shocked. I recently flew with Lufthansa HAM-FRA-TLS & as expected there were no document checks. Similar when we fly to Mallorca. Whilst in Toulouse a German colleague had his wallet stolen incl...

Re: Experience writing a Will in Germany

I understand a Will must be hand written and it can be stored with an Amt for a small fee. I have never understood why a German will has to be hand-written when in UK you can type it up (nowadays use a computer/word processor), get 2 witnesses off the street to sign & its done. German burocracy...

Re: How did you learn German?

I'll repeat my story as its lost with the old forum... Several years German at grammar school (Stockport). We even spent a year in Munich/Ottobrunn 1966/67 when my father & his research group spent a year working with E.O. Fischer https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_Otto_Fischer at the TU Munich...

Because yesterday I passed my medical examination allowing me to continue flying for another 2 years... However it would be good to reduce some of the "on board" ballast... Attending the IGC Plenary meeting in Toulouse on the 1st & 2nd March did not help - they served us 3-course meals...

What the OP wrote about was not taxation in Germany - its what his health insurance will base their charges on.

German taxation is a separate matter.

Sadly so - thats what they did to me when calculating the rates for my wife (halved - I'm privately insured & thus my charges are independent of income).

Re: Legalising cannabis

I don't see why it should be illegal. IMO drunk people are more likely to cause problems than pot smokers. My daughter (works in forensic lab @ UKE) says that there are more drugs than alcohol in the blood tests that she analyses. Which drugs and are they the cause of death? The blood tests are tho...
