Re: school exchange and Anmeldung

I asked this question just now to the school (the German school), and they answered no, she will remain angemeldet here in Germany. That's right, no "abmelden". But her school needs to allow that one year ("Beurlaubung"). And one foundation for the "Beurlaubung" are he...

Re: school exchange and Anmeldung

Her health insurance will cover her with a top up. What do you mean? You mean her Germany KK will cover her health care while she's outside Germany, by us paying a top-up, so there's no need for her to have an health insurance over there? Sounds strange.... I guess the following (but as usual, I'm ...

OK, thanks a lot.
I trust you. But I am extremely surprised.

school exchange and Anmeldung

If my 15yo daugther does a 10-months period outside Germany for a school exchange, sometime maybe next year or the year after, should we abmelden her? I asked this question just now to the school (the German school), and they answered no, she will remain angemeldet here in Germany. But I find this v...

I have been running most days since 1998, 37yr and counting, with a very huge number of very different runners.

Today was a special run because for the first time I ran with my daughter.

That's why I'm happy.

Re: Why are you happy today?

Here why I'm happy today. Just harvested from the dwarf tree at the back of the garden, the one sandwiched between the tomatoes hochbeet, the one that every winter I think "it looks so old small and crappy that surely will not produce anything good and I better get rid of it....". And now ...

Re: Umsatzsteuer reminder - Doch I have already submitted it !!

In ELSTER, there is a section "Meine Formulare". There, go into the tab "Übermittelte Formulare". Find the transmitted Umsatzsteuererklärung 2023 in that list, click on it and then on the bottom choose "Herunterladen --> PDF". Send this downloaded "Übertragungspro...

Re: Problems in Supermarkets in Germany

Technology replacing workers that are then left without work is an economic myth that died very long time ago. The 'myth' is that long term, there are fewer jobs available because the machines took them. That is, agreed, not true on a historical economic scale. Unfortunately, vast swathes of people...

Umsatzsteuer reminder - Doch I have already submitted it !!

I got a letter from the Finanzamt, yesterday, they write I have not yet submitted my 2023 Umsatzsteuererklaerung (for my photovoltaik, at least I presume so, I have nothing else that requires USt as far as I know....). So I logged into Elster and guess what I found.... Elster says this has already b...

Re: Zahnreinigung and GKK

If it sounds too good to be true is because ...... My GKK, TK, already refunds 40eur/yr for Zahnreinigung. My last one costed me 119,04 eur. The total Zahnreinigung cost WITH this extra insurance is actually 16,9 eur/month Total Zahnreinigugn cost, 2/yr as reccommended by the Praxis: With extra insu...

Re: Problems in Supermarkets in Germany

Some more on the DE UK supermarket comparison..... I like here that half-price offers are rare. In the UK instead they are very common. Not sure how many shoppers think "it's good to pay half", but I rather think "they charge me TWICE for most products, those not formally on offer&quo...

Re: Problems in Supermarkets in Germany

Unless I specifically inform the cashier that I intend to pay by card (well, phone), the card reader is not engaged. Why?????? Imagine someone withdrawing money from your phone without your authorization. You would call that theft, wouldn't you? That's why the withdrawal function of the checkout is...

Since we are on the topic... One thing that annoys me at the supermarket here in Germany is that it is by expected customers do not by default pay by card but rather by bargeld. Unless I specifically inform the cashier that I intend to pay by card (well, phone), the card reader is not engaged. Why??...

Re: Problems in Supermarkets in Germany

I've been shopping in German supermarkets for 30 years and the improvements have been massive, but when you compare them to supermarkets in France or the UK, they are still like the stone age. Interesting. All in all, I prefer supermarkets in Germany than in England. In England I faced that friendl...
