Re: Glatteis/Black ice clearing
Cat litter, interesting! Isn't that a bit expenive for a large area? Think I've found a delivery company, hopefully a small sack will turn up tomorrow. Am trying to avoid driving in these conditions. Got spooked a couple of years ago when someone slid into my car on a bad local bend in light snow. ...

Re: Krankenkasse and non-EU pension
I completely agree, TK have just contacted me and asked for Steuerbescheid despite me having informed them already of pension income from the UK. I have the same thing with AOK every year. They want estimated income to calculate my current contributions and Steuerbescheid to correct the past if my ...

Re: The Weather
It's snowing in Salzgitter for sure. I shoveled this morning. Was maybe 20cm thick but windy so in some areas you have more. I got the bus into town today and the bus driver said they stopped driving to Braunschweig because the bus got stuck. Apparently the train isn't running either but they have a...

Re: sign up for KK before starting my new job?
I remember insurance being some kind of headache when I arrived here a million years ago. TK would not insure me because I didn't come here from an EU country and I did not have a job yet so I am guessing that you need your employer to take care of your insurance.

Re: Living in Berlin without a drivers license
What if you rent a room from someone and the bills are in their name? :D Apparently they will accept these: Utility Bills: Electric, water, gas, internet, cable (within 90 days). Financial/Housing: Deed, mortgage statement, rental lease, property tax bill. Vehicle/Insurance: Texas vehicle registrat...

Re: Living in Berlin without a drivers license
Meh. Visited my son in Texas some years ago, went to the DMV and got a license for $15 using his address. My Virginia one was expiring. Now I have a German one so I can drive in the U.S. or if necessary in DE. A lot of things have changed though. Everything was easier some years ago. Texas now requ...

Re: Living in Berlin without a drivers license
Sorry I had no idea. But taking a more difficult test in a different state being illegal is kind of funny! The other way round I get. x Many states require residency in order to get a license there so you need a rental agreement, utility bill or something. It's kind of the same in the EU. You are s...

Re: Living in Berlin without a drivers license
> Your bigger problem is that CA has no reciprocity with DE, which means that you'll need to take courses and tests to get a DE license. Note CA to me is California. Perhaps you think I mean Canada. Sorry for the confusion. I have no interest in getting a German drivers license, as I hate driving a...

Re: Ryanair goes totally digital. No paper bording passes.
Age UK have asked Ryanair to not forget about the 4.3 million older people who do not use a smartphone and recommends that there must always be an alternative to digital processing. As quoted on the first reply on this thread, you do not need a smart phone. You can check in online on a computer and...

Re: Cancellations - not processed and not refunded
If you legally owe them, it's not going to help reversing the SEPA payments because they will charge you again and maybe add a processing fee for their troubles. They don't really care if your daughter was there. Just that you had a valid contract. Google tells me that new contracts as of March 1, 2...

This article is kind of sobering :( and I'm wondering what our local Icelandic guy here on TT thinks about it. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/nov/15/icelandic-is-in-danger-of-dying-out-because-of-ai-and-english-language-media-says-former-pm The world is about to end too, isn't it? 8-) Since...

Re: Ryanair goes totally digital. No paper bording passes.
It is still possible to get good support when you get the right person on the right website. I told him we are now best friends. He agreed. :D Yeah, and then you can get the wrong person too. A few weeks ago, Telekom offered me to upgrade my internet to glasfaser, faster internet, same price. When ...

Re: Ryanair goes totally digital. No paper bording passes.
This seems to be the development. You need to be online to do things or you run into problems and/or have to pay extra. The first I've heard of an airport check in fee was a year ago and it was eurowings. I usually check in online. I used to print my boarding passes. I don't anymore. You can have yo...

Re: school exchange and Anmeldung
A friends daughter went on school exchange to Canada last year. If she would have stayed the full winter, she would not have gotten credit and would have lost a year. She had another option which was to come back in Feb. which would allow her to complete the school year here without a loss so that i...

There is no housing shortage where I live but that's because nobody wants to live here
Nearby larger towns already have a problem. Desirable cities like Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart etc. forget it.

Re: Problems in Supermarkets in Germany
Side note - why is everyone in such a manic hurry?? That drives me crazy. I see retired people like me rushing around like crazy and trying to carve 20 seconds off of everything. I let rushing people go in front of me almost every time I shop. Not just the ones with a couple of items. The ones that...
