Re: What made you smile today? :)

Yeah, that’s In Texas (area code 903). I grew up in Louisiana, and you can pick up fish bait at the gas station or the restaurant when you‘re out in the boonies, or on you‘re way there. It’s one-stop shopping. My grandfather from New Iberia was a fisherman. I guess as a kid I never pondered how stra...

Re: What are you watching right now?

I’m currently warching the series „München Mord“ (ZDF) on our new 48“ TV (which i love 😃). A friend turned me onto it and I’m hooked. Learning plenty of Bayerisch too. The acting, including from the recently deceased Alexander Held, is quite good IMO.

Re: Finding a club or group for knitting?

Wasn't sure if the answer should be here or the flummox thread... Knitting cinema... Watch a film and the lights are only a little dimmed. https://kino-intimes.de/strickkino.html Yeah, it's offered here in Konstanz too, but in my group we are all busy and don't see much benefit. I can knit at home ...

Re: Finding a club or group for knitting?

I was just in Berlin in February visiting my longtime friend that I met when living in Steglitz in 1986. While there I visited the shop, Frau Wolle, and it is excellent and has super nice and helpful staff. I suggest you go there and ask them if you haven’t already and ask about this. I will be back...

Re: Finding a club or group for knitting?

Maybe you can advertise in your neighborhood or ask a few friends or acquaintances to help you put the word out about wanting to start an in-person group. Or ask at a local knitting shop in Berlin, of which there are many. I’m in such a group here in Konstanz and really enjoy improving my knitting s...

Re: Things to ponder

I recently read aloud Roald Dahl‘s BFG to my 9-year old Armenian-Germerican granddaughter and had to modify and/or explain a lot due to his witty writing. The giant speaks funny English. Human beings are human beans and there are things like „It is so gigantuous I is needing bicirculars and telescoo...

Re: Things to ponder

Context is such a major force in both language and literacy acquisition skill building. I am constantly reminded of this in my own quest to improve my German. It’s a real high when a light goes on! One just gets better and better at filling in the missing pieces. Of course kids are thorougly a...

Re: Whats up in the South?

Approaching Innsbruck on the way home to Konstanz following a fun week in Südtirol. Hubby has a special birthday coming up and this trip, including a visit to Bozen and a meet and greet with Ötzi 🤩, was on his wish list. I had fun getting about in Italy with German. 😂

Re: German word of the day

:D In this instance I think they were just writing according to English conventions. Makes sense now. NYT uses Schadenfreude often, but with a small s. OK. That’s fair, just as computer is written as Computer here. My bad, for not just changing it to “real” German, since this is the 🇩🇪 word of the d...

Re: German word of the day

I know, but I wrote it as they did in the article! Found that a tad surprising actually. They also didn’t capitalize the h in Handtuchkriege. 😱 I was mostly amused since I don’t recall hearing those terms and I think they’re cute. 😁

Re: Wohngeld and Renting a fully furnished 1 room apartment

Until Jan 2024 we had to pay 25€ a month, along with 4 other families in the house, for Kabel. $1,500 total for nada! It was useless for us cuz we, and each of the other 4, choose and pay our ISP privately and no family uses Kabel TV. When the law changed we got letters stating the monthly rent was ...

Re: Whats up in the South?

Way down here on the Bodensee we’ve had a week of sun. I spent the last several days organizing my hanging boxes on my front and back balconies and planting flowers. Now I can just start enjoying the fruit of my labor on a daily basis. I love this time of year. Love running back and forth to Toom an...

Re: Why are you happy today?

Apparently I'm currently entitled to a Canadian citizenship by virtue of my great-grandfather. My sister and my uncle who is just 2 years my senior are thinkin' on it. Of course, I believe my German permanent residency and future citizenship benefit me much more, especially since I'm parked here for...

Re: Waste removal

I know there are some Entruempelung services, but my (perhaps false) understanding is that they clear out all the crÄp on the understanding that there may be a few jewels for them worth keeping - in my case, there really isn't anything particularly valuable. Here the Caritas will come and empty the...

Re: autopayment of bank credit card

I have the Advanzia Mastercard Gold, as noted above by Nixon, which also doesnt't take money automatically to pay the minimum balance. I use it a few times a year and pay it off online from our Sparkasse account. Franky, it's just a backup card, in case I must use a EU-based cc Don't you have to pa...

Well, the 48" TV on the stand with wheels is awesome! I watched Tatort München the last two evenings on it. I'm gonna miss Franz and Ivo. Maybe I'll have to go back to the beginning and watch them all again.
