Re: Why are you happy today?
Apparently I'm currently entitled to a Canadian citizenship by virtue of my great-grandfather. My sister and my uncle who is just 2 years my senior are thinkin' on it. Of course, I believe my German permanent residency and future citizenship benefit me much more, especially since I'm parked here for...

Re: Waste removal
I know there are some Entruempelung services, but my (perhaps false) understanding is that they clear out all the crÄp on the understanding that there may be a few jewels for them worth keeping - in my case, there really isn't anything particularly valuable. Here the Caritas will come and empty the...

Re: autopayment of bank credit card
I have the Advanzia Mastercard Gold, as noted above by Nixon, which also doesnt't take money automatically to pay the minimum balance. I use it a few times a year and pay it off online from our Sparkasse account. Franky, it's just a backup card, in case I must use a EU-based cc Don't you have to pa...

Re: Why are you happy today?
Well, the 48" TV on the stand with wheels is awesome! I watched Tatort München the last two evenings on it.
I'm gonna miss Franz and Ivo. Maybe I'll have to go back to the beginning and watch them all again.

Re: autopayment of bank credit card
The TF Mastercard Gold is about the only one I know of, which doesn't automatically take money from your account to pay off the minimum balance. I've had one for a couple of years now and use it as a backup to my regular credit card. I have the Advanzia Mastercard Gold, as noted above by Nixon, whi...

Re: Why are you happy today?
After spending the last 40 years sans TV we decided to get one (48") so we could watch content like nature shows, documentaries, and certain films together and also with the Armenian Germericans (3, 6, & 9) when they visit. :D Our couch faces out to two walls of windows. So we bought a cool...

Re: US citizens can vote in state elections matching last US residence
You can vote for statewide offices, but not local offices. I am allowed to vote in local elections too (Lawrence, KS), and do, such as for mayor, school board, county clerk, judicial appointments, local referendums, etc. Obviously I'm no longer as attached to those outcomes on a daily personal leve...

Yes. I'm trying not to freak out about that possibility.

Re: US citizens can vote in state elections matching last US residence
I was surprised to learn from a friend that US expats can vote in state elections for the state where they last lived: I've been doing that ever since I moved here in 2019. I also vote in local elections. I'm up to date with my registration for the next round, one in August and then the midterms, a...

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?
What a mess! More and more folks keep getting caught up in this not-so-pretty scenario. Other teens are stranded abroad.

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?
She had her British birth certificate with her, did not help. Does the British birth certificate automatically indicate the person's citizenship? My US birth certificate alone is evidence of citizenship, since I was born in the US. This is not the case for my husband, a naturalized citizen who was ...

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?
How do you get your UK birth-certificate when you are already overseas? In 2024 I actually ordered 2 new official notarized birth certificates online from the state office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and paid to have them sent to 🇩🇪 via registered mail. Had ‘em in two weeks. I wanted one for my Niede...

It made me annoyed, frustrated, and embarrassed. I didn’t laugh, but of course I’ve got a different passport than you do I believe.

Re: Why are you happy today?
Tonight I saw a fun movie, Die Ältern, with my German friend and I understood the fast moving dialog and jokes. 🥳 And I‘m in a knitting group with German gals and am progressing well at making my first ever top-down sweater for me 3 year old grandson. I did myself a favor and got an English version ...

Re: What do you think about Iran conflict?
Our elderly neighbors, who spend the winter months every year in Goa, wrote today to update us. They were supposed to fly back with Qatar Airlines yesterday or today and all flights are halted at least until March 6th. This means tomorrow they have to go out of their way to some bureaucratic office ...

Re: What are you watching right now?
Seaside Hotel, (a Danish series), dubbed in German. I'm happily hangin' in there w/o subtitles (not available at ARD). It's entertaining historical fiction with the parallel stories of the upper and lower classes playing out side by side. I'm hooked! It's out there in English too. https://www.ardmed...

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?
Right. My Armenian-Germerican grands (3, 6, & 9), who have never set foot in the US, have US passports (no dual citizenship) that must be renewed every 5 years. We have to always keep track of each cycle cuz a US citizen can't enter the EU with less than 3 months to expiration since that's the l...
