Re: Real estate investment in germany
I am in a short-term furnished rental since I just arrived in Berlin at the end of January. My neighbor across the way told me that the previous tenant had lived here 37 years, but that the landlords claimed Eigenbedarf and kicked her out. The place stayed empty for a few months, and then they star...

Re: dual US and German SIMS
Changing is probably bad idea, because you may need to change back for some reason I won't be changing back to the address Google has on file for me, as it's not even the most recent place I lived in the U.S. I'm willing to take the risk since inevitably other problems will arise if I don't. I have...

Re: dual US and German SIMS
I'd say I've spent at least 2 hours trying to change my Google Play profile. The upshot is, there is a button labelled "Change Google Play country to Germany", but when I click it, nothing happens. A friend who moved to Ireland suggested creating a "private sphere" https://suppor...

Ah, this looks helpful!

But I'd still rather go with a personal recommendation.
Thanks,

Finding a Steuerberater
Hello folks, Might someone recommend a Steuerberater who is familiar with American tax law, or failing that, recommend a way to find one? I see that https://web2.cylex.de/s?q=steuerberater&c=Berlin&z=10555&p=1&dst=&sUrl=&cUrl=Berlin lists offices in my neighborhood, but I'd r...

Re: dual US and German SIMS
Here is a recap of my experience, in the hope that it might help someone else. I went to Edeka and bought a 70€ Telekom-backed SIM. Upon returning home and installing it in my phone, I tried to activate it via the Edeka Smart App, but the Google Play Store informed me that "This app isn't avail...

Re: dual US and German SIMS
Your US passport is your Ausweis. That’s what I used of course to get my number years ago. I just went to the Telekom store and dealt with a human being. I was referring to the Ausweis app, which requires a "german ID card, electronic residence permit or eID card for EU citizens." I suppo...

Renting a Postfach
I was thinking of renting a Postfach at a Deutsche Post location just so that I won't have to change my address everywhere when I change apartments. As far as I can tell, the DP website Filialsuche does not list which locations have boxes for rent, even if one clicks on a location and consults "...

Re: dual US and German SIMS
OK, either follow Kaffemitmilch's advice how to get the APP running,or use any webbrowser at https://www.edeka-smart.de/freischalten : I can't use the web method because I have no Ausweis. And I can't install the Edeka app because Google Play is locked to the US. To change the country, I must assoc...

Re: dual US and German SIMS
Deutsche Post explained that the SIM seller must provide the Postident document. Unfortunately, the Edeka store where I bought the SIM has apparently never heard of the Postident document. I sent Edeka Kundenbetreuung another message, in the hope that they will help. Thanks everyone for their advice...

Re: shipping household goods from US to Berlin
I ended up choosing JK Moving, which so far has been a good choice. They manage a move from end-to-end, meaning that they hire Ace Packing to pick my goods, a shipping company to transfer them across the Atlantic, and Rosenbrock to deliver them in Berlin. Ace sent two men who were punctual and frien...

Re: dual US and German SIMS
I went to Edeka and bought a card that promised 40 GB for a one year contract for 70 €. That sounded great, but I failed to complete the verification procedure because Google Play reported that the Edeka Smart App "is not installable in your country." Apparently my phone knows that it was ...

dual US and German SIMS
I'd like to get a German phone number for obvious reasons, but would like to keep my US number at least for a while. I thought that perhaps I could get a discount here in Germany with Telekom since I have T-Mobile in the US, but as far as I can tell, that's not true. Does anyone have advice about ge...

Re: Why are you happy today?
On 31/1, I will wake up in Berlin after a redeye to start the new chapter in my life.
And, as of Thursday, I already have a social event planned there of the kind that made me want to move in the first place.
Now back to packing . . .

Re: Obituaries
I encountered Scott Adams twice. The first time was when, at the start of his popularity, he bought his favorite restaurant in Pleasanton, California and gave it to his favorite waitress Stacy as a gift. The restaurant's opening featured a book signing which my then-boyfriend and I attended. Afterwa...

Re: German residence, US credit card and mail-forwarding
FYI: Capital One allows one person to have more than one card (each card has different benefits, points, ...). Seemed strange at first, but I now view it as practical. I decided to get a second card recently cuz my first card expires this February and I didn't want a gap without a US card while wai...

Re: German residence, US credit card and mail-forwarding
I would suggest using your brother's address. I know folks who use a scanning service and are happy with it, but I haven't yet gone that route. Capital One is now offering me the option to get a virtual credit card, but I haven't yet tried that. I'm fine with my current system. I use my US card dai...

Re: German residence, US credit card and mail-forwarding
The employer wants to see a German bank account (or at least a European one) to transfer your hard earned money to. So you will have to mess around with German banks very early anyway, probably in the first two weeks. Agreed. I already have a plan to open a Volksbank account and have my pay deposit...
