Re: HMRC: is it worth paying voluntary class 3 NI contribution?

Umm, what??? The Triple Lock is a non-statutory government policy to increase the pension as I set out in my post. If (or perhaps when) any government decides to ditch that policy, the law would once again dictate the annual index-linked increase in the state pension and that requires that the pensi...

Re: HMRC: is it worth paying voluntary class 3 NI contribution?

Class 2 has ended for years 2026/27 and later, and HMRC are writing to people already paying Class 2 (or 3) to tell them what to do if they wish to continue paying at Class 3. https://www.gov.uk/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions/if-you-live-or-work-abroad A Class 3 year, at 2026/27 rates, c...

Re: UK State pension/DE DRV when divorcing

Sorry for not replying earlier but I have been away for a couple of months exploring the upside down and furthest-away inhabited islands, aka NZ. Your post is from 6 April but I assume he forecast you mention is from before that date, so using last years' pension rates? If so, then the slight differ...

Re: NI back payments – claim in 2025 German tax return?

I have heard people saying that if you claim a deduction in this way then the UK State pension may become taxable in Germany. Apparently AI appears to back this notion up. But then for AI, crap in gives bigger crap out. I don't hold to this view at all as the DTA is quite clear at Article 17(2) that...

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?

Sorry but that doesn't make sense. If you are a British and EU citizen, then settled status is of no relevance and why, if you are UK resident would you not have a UK passport as a dual citizen? If correct it seems somewhat niche!

Re: National Insurance Class 3 contributions and German tax

You won't get a schedule of the NI paid unless you ask for one. We used the HMRC Digital Assistant (chat) to talk to the NI team (just keep typing "adviser" or "agent" to get past the bot) and ask for a letter detailing the payment(s). I can't remember how long it took to arrive.

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?

Because you can't - simple as that. You could of course renounce your British citizenship but that would be a bit of overkill. And don't forget that if you have kids who are British by birth, whether born in the UK or to a British parent abroad, then they too have dual nationality if they have Germa...

Re: UK State pension/DE DRV when divorcing

If your current UK pension forecast is less than £230.25 then you don't have and cannot not generate a protected payment.

Re: UK State pension/DE DRV when divorcing

I assume you reach UK pension age after 5 April 2016 and current husband has no UK entitlement. If so, your new state pension remains personal to you and would not (under UK law) feature as an asset in the divorce. However, if you are entitled to a "protected payment" because at 5 April 20...

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?

You have an ETA in your passport at the moment but the rules change on 25 February. As you cannot (from that date at least) get an ETA as a British citizen, then that ETA will presumably be invalid from that date. The guidance is clear about what is needed from 25 Feb. Whether you choose to ignore i...

Re: Entering UK for dual citizens new regulations

I think it's MUST, not should. As a dual citizen, you are not allowed to apply for an ETA for your other passport and cannot enter the UK on it without an ETA, so you MUST use your UK (or Irish as the case may be) passport.

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?

The article is true and the GOV UK guidance is absolutely clear. You can of course do what you like but don't complain if you are denied entry if you turn up without a valid UK passport.

Re: Can British citizens travel to the UK using a non-British passport?

I think you all need to read the guidance again. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/electronic-travel-authorisation-eta-guide-for-dual-citizens "You cannot get an ETA if you are a dual citizen with either: British citizenship Irish citizenship " From 25 February you will need to use a valid Briti...

Re: question on our UK let

A good tenant is worth their weight in gold and if she is as good as you say, then I would be minded to try to keep her despite the risks. But think of it from her perspective too. If she worries that she might go into arrears that could change her approach to many things and she could become a not-...

Re: Any risks in being executor of my UK parents will

The Executor is a legal person and as such I would suggest opening an Executor or Trustee account with whichever bank. All estate income and funds should go into that account, so you can account for any IHT (sounds like none) and any Income Tax that may fall due if the administration takes a while.

Re: Including English working years in German pension insurance

Then I think that all you need to do is look at the combined schedule and count the months (1 day "occupied" in a month makes the whole month count) to see how that compares with expectations, with the numbers in the summary and with what that means going forward.

Re: Including English working years in German pension insurance

Have fun working through the maths - does your head in - but it means for you that the amount of pension does not change under the EU aggregation calculation, other than the fact that if you needed 35 years, you would qualify under that but not necessarily using your domestic record.
