Re: How to handle payment issue on taxes
Until 2025, I've never collected over 1000EUR in VAT, so I've only ever done annual VAT filings. In 2025, I went over that threshold, though was still under 2000EUR. The limit is 2,000€, not 1,000€, see § 18 (2) sentence 3 UStG: https://dejure.org/gesetze/UStG/18.html --> continue doing yearly VAT ...

it sounds like high earners are saving more through Kinderfreibetrag than with getting Kindergeld? Yes. How the tax filing will work for us now? I thought she would be a separate entity since she will have good income (more than minimum wage). The same it was. She remains as a "child" on ...

Re: Kindergeld for a Duales Studium student?
I am hoping she can start receiving Kindergeld directly, and report it as her income, not us. Kindergeld is not income. All that happens in your tax return is that they compare your Kindergeld amount with the tax amount you would save through the Kinderfreibetrag. And if the latter is more (which o...

Re: Things to ponder
Gemini's answer to this claim: The Short Answer No, it is absolutely not true. The claim that "Only 55 people out of 100 can read this" is completely fabricated. In reality, the vast majority of literate, fluent English speakers can read this paragraph with relative ease. The statistic at ...

Re: "Correct Rents are the Exception"
I'll be moving from one furnished apartment to another. As far as I can tell, they are exempt from rental control. They're not, you simply ask the landlord for proof what the furniture cost and when it was purchased and use 2% of that cost as the "furniture surcharge". --> the rent after ...

Unless you are moving into a new build or into an appartment that went through such an extensive renovation that it may as well have been a new build, the Mietpreisbremse applies to all apartments in Berlin.

Yes, you need to book an appointment at a Bürgeramt (any will do) and then bring along your passport and the signed Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung issued by your landlord: https://www.aesthetics.mpg.de/fileadmin/user_upload/100-Institute/Administration-Services/IO-InternationalOffice/Wohnungsgeberbestae...
