Re: German taxation of foreign interest bearing account
Should I include some kind of brief note with my Anlage KAP (filing with ELSTER), to confirm that this is due to my applying the new interpretation as of 2025, in case they flag the difference compared to previous years? I wouldn't bother. Because this may then lead to questions why you didn't alre...

Re: autopayment of bank credit card
You can find credit cards with "autopayment" here, you need to look at the row "Full payment can be selected in the application"="Vollzahlung im Antrag wählbar" at the bottom: https://www-modern--banking-de.translate.goog/vergleich-kreditkarte-12.php?ab=1&_x_tr_sl=d...

Yes, you need to do an immediate Widerspruch by e-mail, to which you attach last year's invoice.
Immediately pay what last year's invoice was, and also attach the proof of payment, since that is what you are reasonably expected to pay.

Re: Joint taxation of spouses. Ehegattensplitting.
Yes, I don't see Ehegattensplitting being abandoned any time soon, it's a SPD minister who is pushing it and they are only the junior partner in the coalition. But there is another problem on the horizon: It's a CDU minister who is threatening to increase the income of public health insurance (which...

Re: How to handle payment issue on taxes
If you always declare things as they really happened. If, for example, the client paid 1,000€ of a 1,190€ invoice in 2025, then the 2025 net turnover is 1,000/1.19 = 840.34€ and the VAT on it 159.66€ (= 1,000€ - 840.34€). If in 2026, they by mistake paid you 1,190€, then you have no choice but to re...

Re: WEG: Tax return when Abrechnung from the Hausverwaltung comes very late in the year
Use an estimated figure and when filing the income tax return, tell the Finanzamt that that amount was only estimated and ask them to issue the Bescheid "unter Vorbehalt der Nachprüfung" (it will say that on page 1 of the Bescheid, that keeps that year "open"), so that you can ge...

Then you cannot use the cited BMF letter, which is about § 35a EStG, i.e. the expenses for a flat you use yourself . These expenses are Werbungskosten in your rental profit calculation. § 35a EStG is mutually exclusive with Werbungskosten, see § 35a (5) Satz 1 EStG: https://www.gesetze-im-internet.d...

When would I change to tax class 1? My daughter is nearly 25 and doesn't live at home at present. Tax classes are irrelevant for you, the complete name of the tax class is "Lohnsteuerklasse", i.e. wage tax class. Since you are not an employee, you do not have a wage to be taxed according ...

Does the ING ETF Sparplan require Vorabpauschale payments? First off, this is the wrong thread to ask this question, this thread is about the Riester-Rente which is something else entirely. A Sparplan is just you buying a few ETF shares every month, which then get put into your Depot (brokerage acc...

Re: Cancel a German Retirement Pension?
I'm afraid that you shouldn't have applied for your German social security pension at DRV (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) in the first place - if you don't hand in the signed application form for the German pension, they don't pay you one. Since it is too late for you to that, since you already receiv...

Re: Taxation of IRA distributions - Article 19a of DTA
I am a retired US citizen, tax-resident in Germany. In 2026 I will begin receiving distributions from my IRA in the US. My IRA was created at my retirement by a roll-over from 403(b) and 457 pension savings plans funded when I worked at public state University in the US. I have read that Article 19...
