Re: Reform proposal would make life harder for Brits living in the EU
A bit off topic but Trump and his cronies have suggested stripping U.S. citizenship from any U.S. citizens that hold dual passports. No, I haven't gotten my German one yet. It is all chaos. One of my English friends calls the Reform party the Deform party. Even though I hold dual citizenship I do u...

Re: Reform proposal would make life harder for Brits living in the EU
I’m not arguing that a proposal automatically becomes wrong because the AfD supports it. If you cherry-pick individual policy details, there will obviously be areas of consensus. The heating law is a reasonable example: if a measure is unaffordable or unsuitable for certain buildings, revising it a...

Re: Reform proposal would make life harder for Brits living in the EU
“Listen to voters” and “implement AfD policies” are not the same thing - They can be though. This is the problem John, you seem to be (and correct me if I'm wrong) completely and totally dismissing any solution to any problem if it's AfD that's suggesting it, even if that solution is the clear and ...

Re: Reform proposal would make life harder for Brits living in the EU
That's a ridiculous overreaction IMO.... they're basically just re-badged Tories with clickbait policies! I think rather than an over-reaction its a tipping point. Its more about feeling like with a right-wing power over all of Europe, having dual nationality feels like a risk. Its not about giving...

Re: Reform proposal would make life harder for Brits living in the EU
To be honest if Reform get into power it will probably finally be worth my while renouncing my UK citizenship. I don't want to be part of a country that could vote that way. Presumably you already have German citizenship? But all is not well here, either. Unlike Reform, the AFD is not dependent on ...

Re: Reform proposal would make life harder for Brits living in the EU
I very much doubt Reform will be able to implement something like that. What will happen with all the 'immigrants' currently claiming benefits? There will be riots. It's just another one of their false promises to get dummies to vote for them. Once they are elected, it suddenly won't be possible, et...

Re: Attractive PayBack deals
We had the same thing a couple of years ago with the Deutschland Card. 12000 points suddenly gone.
I called up and complained and DC recredited the points.
Spent them and never bothered using it again.
I think DC has pretty much died anyway, no?

Re: Junk drawer
I don't get it....
If you didn't have a junk drawer before now, where were you keeping things like old handys, random cables, broken sunglasses, pre-Euro currency, remote controls for devices long since gone, unknown keys, Palm Pilots with rotten batteries etc, etc.?

Re: NI back payments – claim in 2025 German tax return?
I did the same last year, but paid just over €12k to catch up quite a few years before the deadline. IIRC, that is still below the threshhold of what is claimable in a single year. I had to contact them again for them to send me a receipt which I could actually pass on to my accountant, but that cam...

Re: tipping etiquette
To take it a bit further, I usually tip on the net price before taxes. I don't need to tip the Finanzamt. Normally, around 10% depending on the quality of service. I do that to, albeit after taxes, but same difference. It seems to me that Germany has been slowly going the way of the U.S. over the p...

Re: tipping etiquette
In a situation like the one described—table service, a sit-down meal, and a bill of around €70—the local norm would typically be to round up or add roughly 5–10%. So instead of paying exactly €70, most people would say something like “machen Sie 75” or leave €3–€5 extra. It’s done directly when pay...

Re: Waste removal
Inspired by this thread, I'm happy to report that I spent 4 hours in the garage today and have managed to completely fill up my trailer with crap. Some things brought a tear to the eye, the snowboard and boots not used since the year 2000 for example, but I guess you've got to be strong in these sit...

Re: Waste removal
What I would like to do is hire a skip, put everything in it, and let the skip folk take it away. However, whenever I've used the skip folk in the past (once a year after I've removed tress/bushes from the garden), they have been pretty specific about needing to know everything going into the skip ...

Re: What do you think about Iran conflict?
It's all blah until he actually does something and I'll believe in 'less corruption' when that is proven to be the case. It wouldn't be the first (or millionth) time a politician has lied to get into office then turned around and done the opposite to what they promised. It's not like we'd ever reall...
