Re: Attractive PayBack deals
We had the same thing a couple of years ago with the Deutschland Card. 12000 points suddenly gone.
I called up and complained and DC recredited the points.
Spent them and never bothered using it again.
I think DC has pretty much died anyway, no?

For a 1 year lease I wouldn't bother decorating.

Re: Junk drawer
I don't get it....
If you didn't have a junk drawer before now, where were you keeping things like old handys, random cables, broken sunglasses, pre-Euro currency, remote controls for devices long since gone, unknown keys, Palm Pilots with rotten batteries etc, etc.?

Re: NI back payments – claim in 2025 German tax return?
I did the same last year, but paid just over €12k to catch up quite a few years before the deadline. IIRC, that is still below the threshhold of what is claimable in a single year. I had to contact them again for them to send me a receipt which I could actually pass on to my accountant, but that cam...

Re: tipping etiquette
To take it a bit further, I usually tip on the net price before taxes. I don't need to tip the Finanzamt. Normally, around 10% depending on the quality of service. I do that to, albeit after taxes, but same difference. It seems to me that Germany has been slowly going the way of the U.S. over the p...

Re: tipping etiquette
In a situation like the one described—table service, a sit-down meal, and a bill of around €70—the local norm would typically be to round up or add roughly 5–10%. So instead of paying exactly €70, most people would say something like “machen Sie 75” or leave €3–€5 extra. It’s done directly when pay...

Re: Waste removal
Inspired by this thread, I'm happy to report that I spent 4 hours in the garage today and have managed to completely fill up my trailer with crap. Some things brought a tear to the eye, the snowboard and boots not used since the year 2000 for example, but I guess you've got to be strong in these sit...

Re: Waste removal
What I would like to do is hire a skip, put everything in it, and let the skip folk take it away. However, whenever I've used the skip folk in the past (once a year after I've removed tress/bushes from the garden), they have been pretty specific about needing to know everything going into the skip ...

Re: What do you think about Iran conflict?
It's all blah until he actually does something and I'll believe in 'less corruption' when that is proven to be the case. It wouldn't be the first (or millionth) time a politician has lied to get into office then turned around and done the opposite to what they promised. It's not like we'd ever reall...

Re: What do you think about Iran conflict?
I don't remember making any predictions but I'm sure you'll remind me. From another forum re. Péter Magyar (not my words but interesting): Péter Magyar is not the anti-Orbán. He is running on a platform that is Orbán without the corruption. As Orban, Magyar opposes the EU migration pact. He voted ag...

Re: What do you think about Iran conflict?
Unfortunately, Hungary has no access to LNG ports, but who cares? Strange how ‘we have no LNG ports’ keeps appearing as an excuse, but never as a problem worth solving — especially when solutions involve better relations with EU neighbours and less reliance on Russian gas. Almost as if the dependen...

Re: What do you think about Iran conflict?
Orbán is bravely defending Hungary by keeping it hooked on Russian energy, blocking help for a country Russia invaded, and repeating the line that everyone else should absorb the strategic cost instead. Very sovereign. Very patriotic. Very conveniently aligned with the Kremlin. Of course leaders sh...

Re: Patio roof and "Abstandflächen übernommen"
As far as I understand it, Abstandsflächen by DHH is a bit different. I mean, the houses are joined together on the boundary line so the 3m Abstand isn't present there either. Plenty of RMH have Terrassenüberdachungen, which span the full width of the house so they also are not conforming to a theor...

Re: Current computer prices, especially memory and GPU-chips
Yes, I was horrified a couple of weeks ago when checking the prices of RAM. I needed 3 new mini-PCs for 3D rendering duty and a 64GB kit was something like €650 compared to €150 last year. I ended up cannibalising other PCs and laptops to spread out the RAM and bring them up to a bare minimu...

Re: What do you think about Iran conflict?
Eric is normally on the money with most subjects! ***hero*** Orban is just looking out for the interests of Hungary, which is exactly what he should be doing. Do you suggest that he blindly support Ukraine when they have sabotaged and are currently actively blocking oil & gas supplies (from Russ...
