Re: Gymnasium 8th grade voluntary Wiederholung

That's a tough one. Our oldest (yr 7 at gymnasium) is no stranger to picking up 4s (and even the occasional 5 in German), so this is a topic we have considered a few times too. Whilst I certainly can't claim to have the answers, I hope it might help if I share a few of my thoughts. Firstly, she ISN'...

Eurostar costs

There was an earlier discussion on this, but as I couldn't find it, and have just booked a Eurostar trip from Germany to the UK and back, I thought I'd make the following (current) points. 1) bahn.de is cheaper for exactly the same ticket (Cologne to London) than either Eurostar or the Dutch nationa...

Re: What got you flummoxed today?

It's not just today, but one of our neighbours has kindly given us a bunch of flowers to say thanks, which made me think of an issue which has flummoxed me for years. Why do German florists take a bunch of flowers, and cut almost all the stems off, leaving a bunch which is about 10cm high? That is a...

Re: Gardening

Well, I'm the genius who advised to plant parsnips, carrots etc outside a few weeks ago. Took the dog for a nice walk in the snow yesterday, before having to collect son 2 from football due to blizzard conditions. Beautiful, if cold, weather today though. I'm hopeful that local plants and seeds can ...

Re: Digital Exclusion part 1 The Euro soccer in Berlin

Ok, so I checked the UEFA site, and it is sadly correct that you can't print off the tickets from a laptop...something I have been doing to other venues after the site says it is "e-ticket only" (had this at 1FC Köln a few weeks ago). The website does have a specific answer to your questio...

Re: Digital Exclusion part 1 The Euro soccer in Berlin

A few points to note. Firstly, the remaining tickets will go on sale in early May (there isn't a specific date yet), so you can't buy any today. Generally, when they state e-tickets only, you still have the option of buying them online, and printing them out as a pdf at home. Given how quickly all t...

Re: Bayer Neverkusen is MEISTER!

These days I've become obliged (by kid 2) to have more than a passing interest in German football, and even though this is an effzeh house (again, kid 2), what Leverkusen have managed to achieve is impressive. I've been hearing a fair bit about how Bayern have had a poor season (again, Saturday sugg...

Re: Gardening

Carrots, parsnips, Brussel sprouts and spinach went out at the weekend. Tomatoes and peppers can wait until May....at least around here, up a mountain in the Eifel. Probably warm enough if you live in a city like Cologne, but your location wasn't obvious to me from your post (from experience, it pro...

Re: Sofa buying

Chesterfields all the way here, but I agree with Kiplette's comment about checking eBay Kleinanzeigen. There are some real bargains out there, and new stuffing/cushioning can be bought from fabric stores at whichever level of support/comfort you prefer. Last year I picked up 10 antique oak dining ch...

Re: Cost Estimate v. Final invoice

I think it is arguable whether the difference in hours, whilst significant in percentage terms, is really substantial overall. I would be more concerned by the fact that the job does not seem to have been finished, or at least not properly. The work does not seem to have been done / finished to a st...

Re: What's up in the Middle

Thanks Kiplette. Good to see so you too and many familiar names on here. A HUGE thanks to whoever has started this forum. I was missing TT as well as the vast store of information it contained. I was actually wondering why no-one at the Local posted on TT asking if any of us would buy the forum from...

Re: What's up in the Middle

This morning (clear weather) I can see Bonn, or at least the Siebengebierge all the way from my place in glorious Eifel...about 30 miles east of me as the crow flies, so you're definitely "in the middle".
