Re: German word of the day

"Hauserdung"

I read this word whilst thinking in English, and wondered what sort of dung would help houses to grow.

Re: My Photovoltaikanlage

I think Kiplette may well be right and that the pricing may reflect an Eifel premium. So far I've had three written quotes and a couple of estimates from online comparators. The formal quotes were all close. However, based on Kiplette's thought that local firms may be more expensive, I contacted e.o...

Re: My Photovoltaikanlage

I would say it is definitevely overpriced. Have you calculated how long it will take to pay off ? I agree it's pretty expensive too, but a) I'm not getting significantly better quotes (please share supplier details if you have one) and b) we're looking to change one of the cars to electric. Point b...

Re: My Photovoltaikanlage

No itemised pricing. When I had the quotes a few years ago, everything was itemised. This time, both quotes so far have had "all in" prices (everything from scaffolding to screws). On the one hand, that makes it easy for me to know the final cost, but equally, I can't see if there are some...

Re: Bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities

I'm sure it must have been hell if you were nearby when they dropped, but the before and after photos (which seem to be based on Fraufruit's earlier link), suggest that the place certainly wasn't obliterated. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jun/22/how-effective-was-the-us-attack-on-irans-nucl...

Here's today's quote, and some further information about insurance for solar panels. Cost 21,000 (inc. Vat as zero rated) This includes: 18 modules (440wp fullblack) FossEs battery 8,7kw FosEss 8er WR Rundumsorglospaket (scaffolding, fitting, fixtures, management module, labour, lightning protection...

Re: What's up in the Middle

So, Nicksachsen, have you learnt Sorbian? Isn't that your neck of the woods? Sounds interesting. I think linked to Kiplette's comment, it's some sort of Moravian/Ur-Slavic language. You're definitely in the middle though, just the opposite end of the middle to me, if that makes any sense (Belgium is...

Re: My Photovoltaikanlage

Do you mean the current price is too high or the one from a few years ago? In terms of the recent quite, we are getting another quote next week. As for the previous one, we had almost identical quotes from three suppliers and our neighbours who were buying at that time paid similar sums. It is of co...

Re: My Photovoltaikanlage

No problem at all, happy to share Three years ago I was quoted 34k for approximately 28 panels and a 10kw battery. A few weeks ago I was quoted just under 20k for 22 panels and a 10kw battery. I think the earlier quote also included one of those charging points for the car (they used to be subsidise...

Re: My Photovoltaikanlage

The prices for PV have really dropped. I ditched the idea of PV a few years back and only got solar panels for heating water (which works brilliantly), but the financial balance has tipped: 1) prices seem to be about 30% less and 2) will need to change cars and we could use at least one car as an EV...

Re: Why are you happy today?

CHEEEEEESE! Thank goodness the EU and the UK have finally got around to dealing with the biggest cross border issue of the day. No checks on cheddar. Great, positive news, from an otherwise fairly useless year of politics. Oh, and Erasmus is on its way back too, which is nice (brings back so many ha...

Re: Why are you happy today?

An article was published in England (and online) today from Bad Muenstereifel's youngest budding sports journalist. I spend most of my time worrying about the academic difficulties with Kid 1, so I'm very happy (and proud) to have something more positive from Kid2. It is particularly pleasing becaus...

Re: The great British Banger

Great story, thanks. Entertaining and informative, albeit very few food recipes include descriptions like: "its a lot like trying to stuff your wiener into a used condom without the elasticity of latex".
Good luck on the quest for the perfect sausage.

Good headline in the paper: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/apr/29/drink-champagne-reduce-risk-sudden-cardiac-arrest-study-suggests I won't bother reading the whole article, as I've been disappointed by that sort of thing before. Instead, I'll trust the headline tells me all I need to know,...

Re: ‘Odd’ request from imminent new Uk tenant

I guess this is taking a bit of a tangent, but I'm always surprised when landlords agree to allow small dogs but not larger ones (I allow neither). So, big generalisation coming from a large dog owner (perhaps I should say that some of my friends..ok very few...are small dog owners) but in my experi...

Re: ‘Odd’ request from imminent new Uk tenant

It is unusual (i.e. daft) to make that offer after signing the agreement. However, it is not in itself odd, particularly if they have just sold a house. Assumedly, they have cash sitting in the bank doing little or nothing, so are taking a punt that it is beneficial to you to have 6 months' rent up ...

Re: used car - buy and sell

I accept it is safer to deregister first for a private sale, but you do NOT have to deregister the car yourself prior to selling. You just need to be sensible about it, and do the sale properly. You need a written contract, signed, dated (including precise time and KM stand) and with personalausweis...

Re: German taxation of foreign interest bearing account

I've found scalable capital pretty easy. It's a German site and it does a tax summary for my accountant.

They have just started a requirement for me to access it via an "app" on my phone rather than via my laptop, which I find a complete pain, but I guess the youth might even prefer it.

They could start by making contact with your local Familienberatungsstelle (local Kreis website will have a link), they would also give help and contacts for more specific therapy. The Familienberatungsstelle is good and free. As is suchtberatung for family members....it's been a tough year.
