Just finished the 2nd / newly released series of
The Diplomat on Netflix
Well worth it!
And a terrific and unexpected cliff hanger at the very end (no spoiler from me)

Are you worried by letters from the Finanzamt? Does each FA letter cause you tremors? Imagine that you didn't receive one but 1700 letters, all identical, on the same day... Thats what happened to this guy in Quickborn (Schleswig-Holstein) Quote : A man in Quickborn , Schleswig-Holstein, will not so...

Re: International travel health insurance outside Germany
I'm with
https://www.europ-assistance.de/privatkunden
for their travel health insurance. (Reisekrankenversicherung).
Stiftung WarenTest reports them as being TOP of the pile, but
I have never claimed though.
Works for me with several trips abroad over the year.

Re: German word of the day
Wandering around a furniture shop the other day, I couldn't understand the description of a sofa with " Nosagunterfederung ". The mixture of English and Deutsch threw my comprehension out until my wife spotted that the sofa will not sag and has a collection of springs in its base to help w...

Re: Low voltage current on outer surface of Floor lamp
A fuse will only blow if it overloads. That is long after you're dead. Only there to protect the equipment/wiring What you are demonstrating is a failed RCD (Germans say FI Schalter). This should break the circuit if a tiny residual current leaks to earth. This protects you!! Urgently get the landlo...

Re: Temporary car insurance for a car with US license plates
At those prices, wouldn't it be cheaper / easier to rent over here?
Additionally, the rented car wouldn't be so obvious (so less risky)
Just my thoughts...

Re: Hausarzt: some of them have "dr." in front of the name, some not
A Dr. has written a thesis and has gained the qualification 'Doctor' It could be maths or English or whatever. Or in your case a medical Doctor. Passing the exams to be allowed to practice medicine in Germany is enough. Aside: In the UK I was treated by Dr. Smith. But the consultant surgeon was Mr. ...

https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/coming42/10385844/233428/233428_600.jpg This is exactly how an external consultant spoke at my kid's school some 10yrs ago. He was reported to the police by some kids (police of course warned beforehand). Reported to school staff by other kids. The point was however ...

Re: PKV -> GKV after UK retirement age and Brexit
Many thanks, Panda for the explicit and complete answer. Yes, I have a German pension. So my chance getting the NHS to pay my German GKV are now zero. I have to work out if a sojourn in Ireland or the Netherlands would be possible or even worthwhile. Thanks again for the details...even though not wh...

PKV -> GKV after UK retirement age and Brexit
To clarify PKV = Private Krankenversicherung (Private Health Insurance) GKV = Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (Statutory Health Insurance) I am privately insured and want to change to statutory health insurance. So I took out private health insurance some 20 years ago for all sorts of reasons. I'm n...

Re: buying house with credit
If there is a lump sum coming your way in those 10 yrs, then arrange before you sign the mortgage that early repayments are allowed. That way any windfalls can be used to lower your borrowed capital thus reducing monthly payment. eg aging aunt or whoever inheritance, bonus from work. Costs a little ...

Re: What got you flummoxed today?
No, the UK didn't have a central residence register, at least when I lived there.
To get a credit anywhere, I needed to show 3 different 'official' bills to prove I live at a certain address...eg a gas, phone and elec bill.
The idea of an identity card, or Anmeldung was definitely 'not British '

Re: What got you flummoxed today?
So I started to fill in my UK pension form - to tell them that I want to claim a pension.
They want my UK addresses (all 35 years of them) since leaving my parents house until leaving the UK.

Re: What got you flummoxed today?
I'm not really a beer drinker, more of a slosh of wine now and again. Went to the bar in Eckernförde yesterday after a lovely sailing day and a refreshing beer was high on my list Now I'm used to beer going in the big hole at the top of the glass...and that there isn't any other way. So I was seriou...
