Re: Retire to Ireland, Krankenkasse contributions?
Now that's interesting fro, thanks! I have both German and UK state pensions but was not aware of the info in the third point. I had got to the stage of assuming that I'd have to continue with my Kk contributions, expensive, as in your first paragraph. I believe however that then you're still entitl...

Re: The great British Banger
Sounds great! Did you actually achieve that authentic banger taste and texture? I wouldn't go to your lengths to make actual sausages but I dismantle German sousages sometimes to make sausage rolls, mixing up the meat with breadcrumbs and a random onion/spice/herb mixture rolled up in flaky pastry. ...

Yes, choirs are great! I sing with my local choir and a smaller group and probably have sung going on for two hundred songs of all styles, all in the alto part. Got good at spotting archaic usages of the genitive in old songs. OH and I have long-service 'medals' !

Retire to Ireland, Krankenkasse contributions?
Am weighing up the possibilites of moving to Ireland. As an Irish/UK citizen and in receipt of a German state pension this should not be a problem under EU law. I should be entitled to a Medical Card there because of reciprocal arrangements. (Optional to take out private if wanted.) From krankenkass...

Re: ‘Odd’ request from imminent new Uk tenant
I have no time for people who play games like this. The time for negotiating is before signing a contract. So unless you're needing cash in hand urgently, why accept it at a loss? It doesn't make sense to my very unsophisticated financial brain.

"Not to worry, dogs don't. They pee anywhere."
Possibly my mum's invention.
Sometimes she'd top it with "..... said the old woman as she peed in the ocean."

Sorry to hear that FrauFruit. I had a colonoscopy a few years ago, recommended cos dad died of bowel cancer, and the actual procedure was totally fine as they knocked me out briefly. But the drink prep was horrendous, 4 litres of that disgusting weird tasting solution throughout the night. I am not ...

Re: DRV - Lückenauskunft?
Hi, I just fished around in my DRV folder and found copies from my application process back in 2019. Don't know if everything is there but I seem to remember it was reasonably painless. My old CVs were very useful for addresses and dates. Before the face to face interviee I was sent a questionnaire ...

The AfD is strong in many non "western" places. This article from the Guardian was about the EU election in Kaufbeuren in the Allgäu: https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/26/wealthy-german-town-far-right-on-rise-kaufbeuren-afd-nazis. I just looked up their results for this el...

Agreed Gary, I just referred that page as it showed a quick summary of the different cards. I bought it from Railcard. Yes, Trainline charges a commission. Trouble is, there are so many separate regional companies with their own websites and deals it feels you need a degree in logistics to figure ou...

I discovered you do not have to be a UK resident to buy a Railcard which costs £30 p.a. There are various categories, most which give you a third off rail tickets. An expensive treat, but we had a fantastic meal at The India Club, behind the Adlon. Beautiful tableware and atmosphere. Wonderful cocktails, a Bombay Gin concoction still lives in my memory!

AER and Rendite
Probably a Kindergarten level question! Does Rendite in German mean the same as the AER which is usually given in English sources? Am trying to decide on a new Tagesgeld Konto, which as well as having different rates for new and old customers, have different interest intervals (weekly, monthly, annu...

New Deutschland Ticket
Has anyone else had a problem in agreeing to the new price for 2025? DB says that you have to actively agree through the Aboportal, they won't automatically issue the new ticket. I've tried several times but can't log in to the portal; keep getting the message that my data (Abo number/ d.o.b./postco...

I can't see any problem with a nice non-financial gift that everyone in the office can share - lots of unacknowleged donkey work is done by the secretaries or whoever. Big flower arrangement + posh cake could hardly offend!

I came across Cooper's Cider and Bio Cidre Trocken from Kelterei Heil in Rewe, just a small stock of bottles.

Re: Curtains, soft furnishings, where to donate?
Thanks for the suggestions. I'd rather guve to a shop if poss.Trouble with these big container collections is that I think items can only get looked at very quickly and then probably mostly relegated to recycling. In charity shops the customer can browse and use their imagination a bit and come out ...
