Re: German husband moving abroad
Hmm, I am not sure. I don't even know if they check his tax status when you apply. Do you have an Aufenthaltstitel or a Niederlassungserlaubnis? If it's the latter you can definitely stay on your own.

Re: German bank asking for SSN
Is this even legal here in Germany? To turn away customers because of their citizenship?

Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö
Armenia Lai-lai-lai. That's what they sing when they don't know what else to sing. A bit uninspired. Best song and performance at the SONG contest, TBH. Musically the Swiss one was utter dreck. The performance was... interesting... but I still consider this contest about singing and music and a bit...

I've been asked by all my financial institutions here. When they have to report earnings to the IRS, they send me a copy of the form they send.

Re: Pregnancy, health insurance and contract termination
Paid Elternzeit means they pay for your health insurance and give you Elterngeld. If it's unpaid, then you need to jump on your partner's insurance.

Re: How did you learn German?
Dutch and Deutsch are quite similar, and belong to the same language family as Englisch, I guess that is why we find ourselves speaking Denglisch. If someone speaks two very different languages, say Chinese and Englisch, maybe they would be better able to avoid mixing the languages. Absolutely. Eve...

Re: How did you learn German?
I moved here in 2013 from the Netherlands. Learned Dutch on my own. Too cheap for courses. Same with German, except I basically 'converted' the Dutch to German, and slapped on the additional rules. It's far from perfect, but apparently I'm at C1. I don't FEEL like I'm at C1, but my comprehension is ...

Re: Law to modernize nationality law (StARModG) has been signed and published
Frankfurt already has the new law on their website, and are saying you can apply based on that now (probably since they won't get to it before the law change) and you probably won't be asked whether you will renounce your current nationality.

Re: Why are Iran and Israel enemies?
Isn't this always the case? I think yes, it is. Question still stand: why are they enemies? Interesting they were not enemies before the Iranian revolution. Before the revolution the Shah was in-charge, and he was without question aligned with the UK and US. They'd got the monarchy back in, after a...

Re: Law to modernize nationality law (StARModG) has been signed and published
The benefit of an American getting German/EU citizenship is to vote in the country in which you live. That's the most important. The benefits of the PASSPORT are also many. You get to go places where US citizenship is difficult. Plus, you just have another passport in case the other is lost or is be...

Re: Law to modernize nationality law (StARModG) has been signed and published
I correct myself here, the Zentrale Einbürgerungsstelle in Berlin is only for Berlin, every state will manage the applications themselves. The consolidation in Berlin is because before there were offices in every district. So the situation in Berlin, while still dire, it is not as critical as I ini...

Re: Driving licence question
This manual stipulation is weird since Canadians can swap their licenses in the UK with no other tests, and maybe 12 Canadians (a tehnth of the population) can drive a manual car.

Re: Americans - US Passport Renewal & NE
🙏 That’s quite helpful. Another question: We fly to Greece for vacation during the the last two weeks of August. If we get our passports renewed here in April/June can we fly to/from Greece in August as long as show our old passport that’s tied to the current Aufenthaltserlaubnis, along with the ne...
