Thanks. I was also allowed to retain my British citizenship. Considering the next government may attempt to reverse the new nationality laws, I've potentially been very lucky to fall within a short window where dual citizenship is possible.

Re: Why are you happy today?

Today I became a German citizen, regained my EU citizenship, and was also allowed to vote in the German Federal Election after presenting the Wahlamt with my Einbürgerungsurkunde.

Re: Why are you happy today?

After 9 months, my citizenship application has been approved and I can pick up my certificate in February. I'll be an EU citizen again!

Unfortunately it won't be in time to vote in the upcoming election.

Re: Winter Tires (in Winter) new regulations from October 2024

Nothing to do with tyres here, but I was wondering if anybody has a tip for me to help stop the windscreen of my car from getting covered in condensation? You want to reduce the amount of moisture in the air of your cabin. When you start a new journey, turn on the engine and set your air conditione...

Has the electrician provided you with a Prüfprotokolle?

Ask for a detailed invoice with line items; they should be able to provide this (how else would they know the total?).

Re: Early retirement in Germany based on EU contribution history

Thank you. Would transaction receipts downloaded from my bank be sufficient? In a pinch yes, since they will show HRMC as the recipient and "NI" as the subject of the transfer. But it would be better to get a letter issued by HMRC attesting to these NI contributions. OK I'll try with the ...

Re: Selling house through Makler…..what to expect

I don’t know selling legalities so need a good Makler. I wouldn't trust the Makler to know these either. That's what the Notar is for. I sold this year using a Makler. I received valuations from 4 that included detailed reports of the property and market, information about commission, sale prospect...

Re: Selling house through Makler…..what to expect

Emkay, I have it in my mind that you are a woman? (you have made reference to your husband in the past so I am making an assumption here, forgive me if I am wrong). It's also worth considering if the treatment you are receiving is due to your gender. Every woman I know has stories where professional...

Re: Car insurance: why does my premium go up?

If the mood currently spread by insurers alone is anything to go by, the highest wave of price increases in years is on the horizon. Among other things, they cite significantly increasing costs for repairs : according to the German Insurance Association, spare parts have become an average of 6.2% m...

Re: Is the following line in the rental agreement permitted according to BGB 551(2)?

Update: Spoke with the landlord and they said of course the deposit can be paid over 3 months, it's allowed by law (my current landlord said the same thing however it was explicitly stated in the contract). I guess it depends on the landlord, their previous experiences with tenants, and some other f...

Re: Is the following line in the rental agreement permitted according to BGB 551(2)?

Does the tenant have to pay the entire deposit in advance? Guys, I'm surprised even that such questions get asked at all !! Yes, perhaps it was silly to ask considering the answer is clearly: no, BGB 551(2) still applies regardless of what is written in the contract. In my current contract is was e...

Re: Is the following line in the rental agreement permitted according to BGB 551(2)?

1. Sign the contract and when we do the key handover, tell them I'll pay the deposit over 3 months (as is my right). 2. Discuss paying the deposit over 3 months (as is my right) before signing the contract and see how they respond. comment to 1.: The landlord will not hand over the key before the d...

Re: Is the following line in the rental agreement permitted according to BGB 551(2)?

My concern is the landlord either a) not knowing about this law (incompetence), or b) claiming the contract supersedes it (lying) and withholds the keys until the entire deposit is paid upfront. Then we get in to lawyer & local court territory and at this point I wouldn't want this person as my...
