Re: What is different in Germany?

When you registered on this forum, this was done with a British IP. All your posts so far (including the one quoted) came from Italian IPs. If the registration was done from a British IP then the VPN was on UK because I'd probably been watching something on the BBC i-player. ;) Why are our IPs bein...

Re: What is different in Germany?

As I said, it is a matter of opinion for most aspects of life and it also depends a lot on where you are. ;)

Re: What is different in Germany?

Germany functions well. This is a matter of opinion. Tax rates are among the highest in the world. For such high taxes, I personally feel the country functions very poorly compared to other nations. Bureaucracy is ridiculous and a massive blight. Public transport and local services are poor, in som...

Re: Cost Estimate v. Final invoice

It depends partly on what was signed, if anything. We're currently having 2 windows done. I've used the firm before. I've signed the offer, so I expect the final bill to be the same as the offer. On the other occasions it has been exactly the same amount. And by and large for other work we have had ...

Re: Rental contract terms in Germany

What is the length of the contract for renting an apartment in Germany? There is no standard length. Either you set a limited time, because you know you want it back for a specific future date - it may be harder to find a tenant like that as it means the person in question also has to move twice. O...

I see. Oh well in that case it does surprise me that this is the first time you've encountered no ID-checks, for as others have said, no checks inside the Schengen area is the norm. ;) Definitely no reason to be shocked! :)

Re: Lost passport about to travel...

in the last 4 years? People who wanted to travel to momis funeral where stopped at the border as border crossing was not allowed during covid. Schengen rules started back in 1995 - that was my point. Covid didn't come along until 2020 - 25 years later! And covid measures ended a long time ago. Bord...

That surprises me. The Schengen agreement has been running for almost 30 years. But then again, maybe you undertook no or very little travel outside of Germany in the last few decades, I don't know.

Re: What do you do on Saturday evening?

I catch up on emails, or if that's done then I watch a series or a film, generally on DVD, but sometimes online and then go to bed to read. Tonight it was the emails.

Are there lots of people who have not migrated across from the previous forum and that's why it's much quieter now?

Re: Lost passport about to travel...

We flew to France on Monday. Never had to show any ID in any form at airports or on 2 flights. I was shocked. Why the heck were you shocked?! :? The whole idea of Schengen is that there are no systematic checks! I cross borders regularly and usually have only my German permit with me, definitely no...

I know of at least 5 people who have been here for a very long time and have never filed one, since the Finanzamt has never told them to start filing! One has been here since the late 1980s and another couple since the early 2000s. :)

Re: UK Inheritance and the German Finanzamt

just don’t want to make the tax return next year more complicated than it needs to be and I don’t want a fine or to create any reason for the Finanzamt to delve deeper into the situation. Then don't declare it all. At this stage it is the only way to avoid massive hassle and headaches all round, as...

Re: UK Inheritance and the German Finanzamt

unless your tenant pays less than £400 per month rent, they must operate the scheme Understood. They each pay more than £400 pcm naturally. But given that neither we nor our tenants have even heard of the scheme and the current arrangement suits us just fine and has served us well over the last cou...

Re: UK Inheritance and the German Finanzamt

you do not have to use the Scheme unless you’re told to do so by HMRC. This is the key point! ;) And how would the tenant know the scheme even exists? We've never heard of it and we're the landlords! And why would a sitting tenant query a landlord's tax-residence? I am beginning to think you should...

Re: Lost passport about to travel...

I live directly on the German Swiss border and fly in/out of ZRH. They control everyone entering from outside of Schengen, as is required, whereas the folks at CDG don’t seem to care. No idea if actually by law the French are required to check every passport of persons arriving on flights from outs...

Re: Lost passport about to travel...

To my shock, the last two times I flew from Yerevan to Paris I wasn’t required to show any ID to enter Schengen. Sorry, but those guys just don’t seem to care. Before Switzerland joined Schengen I used to enter Germany regularly from there (crossing the land border on foot or using public transport...
